race fuel

I wanted to run some race fuel at high school drags to get a little better time... Will race fuel be ok for my engine? I have a Hesco 4.7L.... I know its not really made for racing... well not at all... but I thought if I went up there and ran pretty well that it would be cool to see the look on the ricers face... also.. what would your predictions be for what I would run... im around 325 ft lbs of trq and 290 hp... its lifted and I have 32s but Im going to strip just about everything out

You will only lose performance. High octane race fuel burns slower. It is only for use in engines that NEED it. You will get the best time from the lowest octane you can run without knocking.

Unless your engine is tuned to use the higher octane (timing advanced, higher compression, etc), you're not going to make any more power than with pump gas.

i always thought that high octane fuel burned at a higher temp making it burn cleaner/more efficiently thus creating more power.

What gearing do you have?

Are you locked in the rear or at least have a LSD?

Do you have an auto or a stick?

What transfercase do you have?

I have a homebrew 4.6L stroker with a manual tranny, 4.10s, and an ARB and on the dyno I ran a 14.8 at 89mph with a 1.9 60foot time. Here is the post of my dyno results: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=44497

I raced my dad in his 95 Impala SS and I have him all the way past 60mph until we even up in 3rd I am right at his rear bumper going into 4th. Before he did the 6 speed manual swap and 4.10 rear gears and coil on plug ignition he ran a 14.7 on the track.

You shouldnt have any problems with rice so long as its not tubo'd or spraying.

I have 4.10 gears, I have an arb air locker (but it shouldnt be on when I run right?) its an auto, and i have the stock np231 case..... I am just hoping to run around 17s, I just need to be able to beat an older stock maxima with about 160hp and a 2001 stock tiburon with 140hp.... and I almost double both there hp and stock so I should be good even though im running 32s right?

You should be in line with MrShoeBoy's time. High 14's. Unless you strip the interior like you said then lower. Race fuel will not give you better performance. The higher the octane the harder fuel is to ignite thats why higher octane prevents detination. Have you ever seen nitro before? You can hold an open flame to it and it wont compust like gasoline will. Thats shy drag cars can run so much boost and compression without detination (most of the time)Same thing with diesel, the fuel is not as easy to ignite thats why they run such high compression to ignite the fuel.

Run with the ARB locked. I have traction issues just when trying to get around town and not even trying to race. When I do decide to go for some "spirited driving" its even harder to get traction with the open diff. You wont hurt the ARB running it locked on the drag strip when going in a stright line down the track. I have done this mulitple times on the street with out issues yet but then again I have a ford 8.8 and not the weak a$$ dana 35. I alreatty blew that thing up with the old motor. I think you will be able to kill the above mentioned vehicles.

The only other thing im worried about with the locker is.... if I launch at around 2500 rpms that wont mess it up at all will it?

Run in 2wd. The 231 wasnt designed to be run in 4x4 on a dry high traction surface like a drag strip. You wont hurt the ARB running it down the track. I had a discussion with one of the ARB tech guys about this and he said that something else will break first before the ARB will blow up.

Launch as high as you can with out spinning the wheels too much. You will have to play with launching your vehicle as different springs, shocks, tires, and air pressure all play a big role in how well you leave the line. I can launch mine around 2k and get a few chirps from the tires but its not enough to slow me down.
