Will the OEM rear shaft from my 97 XJ (4.0, AW4, NP231, 8.25) work in the rear of lets say a 91 which I assume to have the AW4, NP242, D35? I'm pretty sure it is a 4.0 but if it is the 2.5 will it still work or be too short?

I have family stranded a couple hours away because of a broke DS in their 91. Not gonna find a direct replacement since it is late Sunday night. And I still have my stock shaft here.

bring new u-joints

im not sure as to the yoke swapability between the 242 and the 231, the splines might be different...

might have to put your driveshaft with their yoke...

you need:
5/16" wrench for the pinion yoke straps (might want new straps too)
snap ring pilers for INTERNAL snap rings
grease gun
new u-joints
hammer
sockets to pound u-joint out/in

you might also look at the condition of the 242 yoke and the pinion yoke, interesting that a driveshaft would go out and leave them alone.

One BIG problem is that the 95- and 96+ driveshafts use different slipyokes...

Pull the rear driveshaft, and drive in part-time 4wd.

Thanks guys. I didn't go to help get them home cause I 1) don't care for them a whole lot anyways 2) had to run some errands of my own.

I don't know why they haven't pulled the driveline and drove in 4wd. More than likely cause when it broke they decided to get high instead. At any rate, thanks for the input and if I hear from them or am asked my opinion I'll pass it on. I'm pretty sure they can use the shaft if they get the correct ujoints and use their slip yoke.

Eh, find it hillarious if you want but I had to run my 16 month old son to the hospital due to croop.

and spew ATF till the t-case looses enough to overheat and blows up?

i like my idea of swaping yokes on the side of the road and using the rear shaft better...

Ergh - I read it as the 97 having the problem...my '96 is currently running in front-wheel drive 'til I take care of the perpetually imbalanced RE driveshaft. I suppose that's another advantage of an SYE ;)

fixed for ya...

dump the H+T and RE driveshaft...
i had an RE front shaft - before i blew it up when i forgot to tighten the front pinion strap and killed a t-case and a front driveshaft.

You can run a later model without the rear shaft, there is an oil seal there instead of the puking you get with an old one - not sure of the cutoff year but it might have been 1991 but I don't think so...I'm sure it wasn't 1997 (although with a '97 you are safe).

A two liter bottle of soda can do the trick in a pinch.

And I think a sick baby qualifies as more important errands ;).
