Do any of you retards know what spelling, capitalization, and punctuation is? Most of the posts in this thread look like somebody barfed up a boggle game.

id rather have an open 8.25 than welded...from expirience
Want to elaborate? Its a stout axle, I've watched terry beat on his welded 8.25 with 35s, only damage was tearing up the spiders once, which were replaced and re-welded.

I'll be welding my 10.5

Thats what I like to hear! People with experience. There were a few replies that scared the shit out of me. The ones that talked about severe axle wrap and shafts snapping left and right haha. It'll only be a temporary fix until I get another 8.25 so if my ring and pinion are not missing any teeth I'm going to weld it. If I had the extra money of course I would do it all the right way and buy an arb locker but that ain't happening right now. I'm a hard working young man trying to survive in a fucked up world just wanting to drive my sick ass jeep on a 4.5 inch lift sitting on 33's! hahaha oh and chicks love lifted jeeps but I'm sure all of you who roll like I do already know this!!!!!

chicks dont like jeeps that are breaking down when u take them out in it....
dont half ass stuff do it right the first time you will end up with a bigger headache in the end trying to rig it "for now" my .02

for the most part chicks don't like the breaking down jeeps. Unless you get lucky like me ;) Then shes out there helping fix and having fun. :D

Any way. my $.02 if anyone cares: I'm in the same situation, poor college student wants to go wheeling, and wants to do it cheap. I've been running a welded D35 on my DD for 7-8 months now, and I've had to replace the u-joint once, and that was my fault. (came down hard on a rock) Id say go for it. Its a great cheap way to run locked, and as long as your not constantly steering at lock on pavement going 2 mph you'll be fine. And that shit about
"hydroplaning" and "axle wrap", well hydroplaning isn't really an issue if your not a retard when it comes to driving, and it can be fun; and axle wrap hasn't caused any sort of issue for me.....

:soapbox:

and tires don't wear out in 1k miles, where the hell did you come up with that number? Ive had my tires on my welded rear for..... 6Kish and they still have a way to go.

Meh....

My last Jeep ran a 27 spline 8.25", welded on 33" Swampers. I DD'd it, as well as drove it to and from the the trails. Never broke it. Street driving was not a big deal. After about 10-15 minutes of getting used to the push into a curve, you're used to it and it's no big deal. It's like driving an ATV with a live rear axle. Parking lots and whatnot were no different except for some chirping and screeching tires :confused1

One thing though, the accellerated tire wear isn't a myth. It does wear tires faster, however nowhere near what some e-badasses will lead you to believe.

I have my d35 welded in my 91 Xj with 33" tsl's and it has been for almost three years of wheeling it hard with some pavement driving and I've had no problems with springs, ujoints or axleshafts but two weeks ago in the midst of a lowrange pulloff in tacky black dirt with a fullsize Chev. the pinion decided to shear off:piratefla

I thought it drove decent down the road. There is some push in the corners like Georgia Mike mentioned but it is definetly manageable.
