Questions for smokers

I heard it said that nearly all smokers started when they were teenagers.
I did an informal poll of those in my branch office – about 230 people, and I only found one smoker who started when they were 23. All others started as teenagers.
It would make sense then that this is why tobacco companies target teens – even though they say that they don’t.

If you are a smoker, how old were you when you started? :smoker:

17. Quit when I was 28, took it up again about 4 months ago. Going back on patches soon; I could kick my own ass for starting up again.

I used to just smoke when I was partying with my friends in High School, but now at college so many people smoke that I guess it has become a little more regular occurance.

At my first breath or thereabout, I was subjected to unfiltered second hand smoke for over 18 years. This was of the Camel and Lucky Strike blend ...

May both my father and grandfather rest in peace.

I started after my divirce from my first wife. I guess I was 23/24 or so then?

smoked from 13-17. even now when drinking sometime i'll get a craving for one

The only time I've ever smoked was once when drunk and 19 on Okinawa. But most people I know started in HS.

I sterted full time when I was 18. Off and on since about 13, but that was just on occasion. Think it is about time to kick it. Most of them are crappy, but the ones that are good are damn good.

Started when I was 12, my Mother found out when I was fourteen. She told me if I was gonna do it, to not do it in my room where I might burn down the house. I wish she would have beat me to death when she found out. Tried to quit last December, but to no avail. Been smoking now for 17 years. Terry makes me smoke in the laundry room, which is okay, so I can try to keep the smoke away from the kiddo's.

Started on and off at about 15, round the same time I started smoking...uh...other products as well. :greensmok Quit tobacco at 20, 22, and for good at 25. Quit the other stuff when my son was born at 23, but my eyes are still little red slits....

Smoking remains WT.

I'm assuming WT to mean "white trash". I beg to differ. Smoking is an equal opportunity addiction, without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status, disability, or economic situation. Unfortunately, it affects all walks of life, not just "WT".

its just like Abercrombie & Fitch in a way. there ads show models in there 20 somethings, yet teenagers account for most of the sales because they want to emulate those in the ads. the tobacco co's do the same thing. thats why they've never lost a lawsuit that tries to prove they target kids. kids just want to emulate the decade of people ahead of them.

btw i started smoking when i was 15 or so, and continued to smoke for about 8 years. it was too easy to snag a pack out of my moms carton. if your interested, look and see how many of your co-workers parents were smokers. i bet that has a huge influence.

im a non-smoker now and enjoy it a lot, though still feel the cravings. fortunately i can feel the harm of just a couple drags on my lungs when i ride the bike so that keeps me off the devil sticks for now, and hopefully for good.

I tend to agree with Vallaya, on this one. Hell, our cat even enjoys a good smoke three or four times a day. He'll follow Val to the laundry room and stay with her until he's good and nic'ed up.

Then again he does have white fur.

If I had my way, there would be a ban on smoking in ALL public places. I get so tired of walking into a restaurant and turning around leaving because I don't want my kids to have to smell like smoke or coat thier lungs just because they wanted to eat dinner.
