Question on Maximum mileage for a cherokee

I'm sure... it's a former lease vehicle, so you'd figure it would have anti-lock, but... nope!

Why would you want it? It unnecessarily complicates things...

Even if I were inclined to buy a new vehicle (which, frankly, I'm not!) I'd keep an old all-manual, no-power, no-ABS thing around for instructional purposes. I just don't have a lot of faith in technology - the single best safety device, as far as I'm concerned, still lies between the ears. Make cars that any idiot can drive, and every idiot will drive one - that's a Very Bad Thing...

My step uncle had a 93 with over 400k. He gave it to his neice about 2 years ago, and it's still running today as far as i know.

Closing in on 200k miles on my XJ. Did ~174k miles on my original 4.0 engine. Took it apart and it looked so good, you'd think it had only done 50k miles. It easily had another 100k miles left in it without needing a rebuild but I succumbed to an incurable attack of strokeritis. :D

iv got 2 with 160k on them going strong. just sold the wrangler with 190 and that thing was NOT well maintained and it still had the best oil pressure and no problems. My brother had it for 30K and i think changed the oil twice. The 4.0 rocks

This is kind of off topic, but ABS sux A**.

I just don't like the idea of keeping your foot on the brake as you keep sliding and that stupid pulsating feeling.

Ohh yea almost forgot, 99 XJ 110K, and until yesterday had the stock plugs and wires. Thing still ran like a top but felt it ran smoother with the tune up.

Speaking of driving aids...

I read about this 1905 race car (forgot the make). The driver only had brakes in the rear, had to control the spark manually, while hand-pumping air into the gas tank to send fuel into the carb, which would also control the air/fuel mixture.

All of this while doing 60MPH on a gravel track on bicycle tires, trying to see between the smoke of the cars in front of you.

THAT took skill.

True if not equipped with ABS. Dana 35 if it is equipped with ABS.
Crap ....forgot about the ABS factor , thanks for the correction :)

91 that is right at 400,000 miles drove it to California last summer and drive it 100+ miles every day.
87 with 160,000 miles (needs new body) and an 93 with 216,000 miles that will go to up state New York this summer.

Err.... evidently, it's not saved YOUR ass yet! The idea is simple: you're NOT sliding, so you can steer around whatever it is that you're braking hard for. Aka, the cars that suddenly stopped in front of you. The idiot that backed out of his driveway on a blind curve. Etc.

Under *ordinary* circumstances, ABS is a waste of time and money. I've had ABS-equipped cars for 9 years now... put 120k+ on them. They've only saved my skin maybe five or six times. I drive conservatively enough that the ABS only kicks in on me maybe 2-3 times a year... but when it does, it's usually a situation where I'm glad to have it.

The non-ABS XJ has gotten sideways on me often enough that I kinda wish I had ABS....

Same goes for airbags. My dad and my brother have both "tested" theirs, and are glad to have had them.

My '89 was peachup up to about 215k +/-, after I did a rear main the bottom end started letting go, should've done the rod bearings while I was in there... In any case it still runs and makes power (I drive it daily) with 240k now and just some top end noise under high load/rpm (oil's not getting there) and some bottom end noise when starting.

Also this engine was NOT properly maintanied and WAS flogged ;)

Yes I'm aware of the way it is SUPPOSED to work. But the vehicles I had in the past that were ABS equipped sucked because when ever I tryed to stop, not even hard, the ABS was actuated. I just prefer to know to pump my brakes if necessary, or let of.

Im glad my 99' doesen't have it and im happy about it.

I have a 1943 Ford 2N tractor that starts in 5 seconds flat and runs all day with enough power to pull stumps, grade the driveway and climb steep hills. Does that count?...Naaww, guess not..haha
