Question for those who've broken shafts

its alot easier to replace a shaft and keep on wheelin then blowing up a frt gear set and being stuck with rwd, it makes for extremly late nights

that's why I ditched the OEM carrier and went for an ARB to go with my alloys/CTMs :)

This is why i installed a Dana 44 in the rear with Superior chromos and a Detroit Locker, and a 76 H.P.Dana 44 with Dutchman chromos and CTM's and a ARB airlocker in the front with 4:88's on 35's......

So far KNOCK ON WOOD, i have been running Moab, Fordyce, and Rubicon with no axles :explosion in 3 years and counting

I would not waste the time going from a 30 to a 44 or an 8.25 to a 44. if I am going to swap axles its going to be tons.

but then again, I'm not interested in 'hammer down' wheeling, so I am not to worried about my turd...even on 35"s.

Wow thanks for the stories guys, I usually wheel at Rausch on mild blacks and blues. I'll most likely keep stock shafts in there hoping it will be the weak link just incase something does break, I can swallow a 20 buck jy shaft and a new spicer joint... Not so fun to eat the cost of another regear.

I was just thinking for the future, a set of 35s does look nice once i kill these 33s but only time will tell. My wheeling doesn't require 35s just yet, been wheeling at rausch for going on 4 years now and 33s seem to do me good for a daily driver, since its been locked and geared its pretty damn capable for where I feel comfortable putting a full bodied daily.

I also run lunchboxes- aussie front no slip in the rear, the gears are yukon 4.88s

I personally would not run stock axleshafts with 35's. Alloy axles with spicer u-joints should do the job well and depending on how you drive should still fail before the ring and pinion if your gears are set up and broken in properly.

I did this to a superior alloy, like a dumas i didn't have full circle clips on it. I havent replace it yet, trying to decide if I want to drop the coin on the replacement superior or go with stock. I have also heard of people running the stock CV shafts?? What's everybody's input on that?

I was climbing a sandy/rocky hill and had to give it a little to much skinny with the tires almost full lock to driver side. Tire got light and then caught a rock. Blew the cap apart and snapped the joint, then the ear of the shaft caught on the hub assembly bolt and twisted it.

Broken lots of u joints, but never an actual shaft

broke a 27 spline ten factory chromoly shaft at the inner splines, and that's it so far. that was on 35's, locked with 4.56's.

Nice resurection of an old thread!

FYI you don't have to open the cover to get out broken off splines, just reach in there with a strong magnetic picker-upper-thingy, slide them right out.

I did splines, u-joint, and inner and outer ears on a stock d44 shaft. d44 outers and u-joint are about the same size as a d30.
