Project Downward Spiral

I guess this is were it pays off to have a loving woman into the "Jeep thing". She got home tonight and we were talking about it and just said "Stop messing with it, I'm going to order the fancy tube clamps tomorrow for you!"

Perfect. :)

Those are nice, real nice. They're also an absolutely enormous pain in the ass if everything is not aligned absolutely perfectly, much more so than a flat tube flange. :D

I already voted, but +1 vote for welding it solid - it's less work now, and the same amount of work later. :D

You going to Rocktober-Fest?

Gonna try to. worst case I'll drive the ZJ up and just hang out.

Yup, I can see how that would be a PITA... but they're stronger than a flat flange too... you're not relying on the strength of the bolts to hold the pieces together. If you weld the complete tube section in place, then once you're done cut out a section where you want to stick those and put em in while bolted together, then burn em home. Would be a bitch to get everything in place but would probably be worth it.

Put me down as a +1 for welding it too.

Well had some time over the weekend between yard work to get the tubes buttoned up.

While I think they might have looked better under the fender, I'm still happy with the way they came out.

I had a request for a not covered in newspaper front end shot, so here is two. Hopefully I'll have some good wheelin' photos after this weekend. :woohoo:

one of the pictures will have a large red 98 doing a front dig on that beautiful new front end

LET'S GO WHEELIN!!!

Had a great weekend wheelin' and as a result I can now do front digs. :looney:

Pictures to come when I receive them.

LOL... something tells me there was some driveshaft carnage...
Yup. Nothing to major thankfully. I'm just very happy it didn't flail around and take out my exhaust, that was a pain to get tucked up like I have it.

Basically I was doing fine until a slid a little bit off a rock and the axle yoke kissed a rock, which popped the clip on the shaft and sent the cap flying. I'm now looking at options of just replacing the u-joint and slip portion on the shaft and trying to come up with a better way to protect it. Whatever it is, it needs to be relatively inexpensive.

Edit: Looks like the part numbers I need are:
2-3-7681KX - Driveshaft Slip Yoke, 1330, 15 on 16 splines, 1.375" Spline OD, 6.625" End to Joint C/L.
5-790X - 1330 U-Joint
2-94-28X - U Bolt kit

Pssst, I think you need a cool flange yoke that'll spin right off rocks. Or, another type of axle that takes a pinion guard

Call Jeff about the spicer parts, he should be able to get it all and beat pretty much any price out there. Hell, I might even deliever them and get some parts off of you at the same time ;)

Eh, I need it to be cheap now that I need a new door as well.
Anyone know where I can score a 97+ driver's rear door with 96- hinges in stone white, PL, PW?

Sounds like you gents had some fun!!!

If you haven't yet, take a GOOD look at the yoke. When a joint is popped like that, it likes to snap off/spit out the little keeper "teet" (holds the u-joint cap in place on the yoke) as well.

Your looking for a new door too??? Nice!!!

A.

I had a blast!
The yoke is good. The u-joint remained on the axle side.

The door, well I'm petty upset about that. I didn't even do it, it was someone that was impatient and tried to pass me on the trail and knocked the handle in. This crushed the door and now it is perma shut unless I hack it to release the latch. The biggest issue is that door NEEDS to work, as I have to open it to fill the fuel cell. I wouldn't even be upset it I did it leaning against something, the fact that another Jeep hit me (and someone I know) is what really has me ticked.
