Project "Constructive Deconstruction"

no... i had to google it.

and look whos telling me not to forget!

:spin1:

got to work and found these guys waiting for me:

so of course i had to slap it all together:

its so ugly... i love it. all the puzzle pieces fit together:

next order of business... chopping off the WJ's caliper mounts.

as we all know, the 3 hub bolts are metric. the holes are only 80 thou short of being 9/16". so i think im going to open them up and just use standard grade 8s, with a flange nut on the spindle, after i drill the caliper bracket and spindle, and (possibly) tap the spindle. but i need to get the calipers first, so i can double check the orientation, making sure it fits and that i have room to drill the 3 hub bolts. before i burn the caliper mount to the knuckle, i need to throw a stub shaft in it and see how it lines up with the BJs.

lots to do... but plenty of time.
:smoker:

these knuckles are pretty heavy... especially the passenger one, so a little weight reductions was needed:

cleaned up:

i thought about grinding it completely flat, but didnt feel the need. i also contemplated not even chopping off the lower part of the caliper mount, but decided to do so because now i have all kinds of room to weld on the ford caliper mount. i was a little concerned about there being so little material on this side of the knuckle, but the caliper mount is perpendicular to the center bore. i think thatll add ad a lot of rigidity to the knuckle... needed or not.

took out my spindle bearings tonight. probably going to order these spindle bushings soon:

after i drill a few holes, i need to go up north and grab the rest of my 44 stuff so i can bolt it all together and see where the Ujoint landed. if im off a little, ive thought of a few ways to fudge it one way or the other...

option A --> stub shaft isnt long enough:
throw in the slightly longer F250 shafts that my buddy justin has laying around.
option B --> stub shaft is too long:
chop it, and turn a new grove for the snap ring on the lathe.

went home this weekend... got a little done.

traded my moabs with cooper STTs for a set of mastercraft MTs on procomp alloy wheels.
tires are brand spanking new.
im back on a 15" rim.
im back on a load range C wheel.
the procomp rims should be easy to move when i go to 5on5.5.

Looks good... those wheels would look good on the ZJ

That trailer gets around :D

And hooked a dude up with some parts. Wasn't expecting all that thanks brother! I owe you a few or 12 beers next time I see ya!
ya man. we will have some brews whenever the occasion allows. now go pooper scoop your back yard.

hey, if ya want them... keep in touch.

and unfortunately its out of the NAXJA community now. oh well, i got what i payed for it.

progress... albeit slow, but progress...

picked up a cheap spindle bearing to properly space the stub and threw a Ujoint in the stub... i feel like im pretty F'in, dead nut, on...

put the caliper in just to see. am i going to have clearance issues on the C? im thinking possibly... ive thought of a solution for this, i can just clock the caliper bracket to where i want the caliper, and burn it in. then i can drill holes for the spindle where ever i want them. but maybe someone can comment one way or the other:

one thing i noticed... these contours lined up entirely too well. i like it.

time to get on the bridgeport and start drilling some holes.

looks good bud, this seems like an awesome mod for being on a budget and driving to the trail.
not that its a lot of work, but i think being able to get the machining done is what will prevent a lot of people from doing it. locking hubs, more castor, and more width are going to be nice though.

unfortunately, the "budget" part is done... even though i got a hell of a deal, i still payed more than most would like for the steering. frame stiffeners and long arms to come. but ill be able to sell my short arms, trackbar, discos, and maybe my old brake parts to recuperate some costs.

Clock it if it gets in the way, but honestly I think you will be fine.
im going to clock it just because i dont want to regrat it later. i wanted to keep it as high as possible for the sake of my brake lines.

ive decided to index the caliper brackets exactly how i want, because i dont want to regret it later. so i went over to petes (white98xj) house last night and plug welded up the holes that were giving me issues. i thought about doing the others, but figure i can use them as plug welds onto the knuckle. i also didnt feel like grinding them smooth.

one thing i need to learn is to not be afraid to let the welder burn. i also try to add just the bare minimum of material so that i dont have to grind a lot off. there are a couple small pits, but im sure itll be fine.
