POR-15 -- who's used it? what prep do I need to do first? where can I buy it locally in the springs??

TIA:huh:

I used it about 18 years ago:) I bought it direct from the company (Actually used a phone to order the stuff... what did we do without the web). I remember prep being fairly minimal. the stuff is really messy if it gets on your hands. works great though.

Looks like the website has some good info about how to use it...

Definately it does, I went back there after posting to see if they had a "dealer" link.. no such luck.

Don't get it on your hootus.

por15.com

i've got some ready to go, but haven't used it yet. buddy just did his floorboard with the 3 piece kit (includes cleaning and prep chemicals)

You trying to protect it from rust or remove treat the rust? Never used POR-15, but read about it and the prep sounds like a pain.

I used this awesome called "ONE-STEP" you can get it from any auto paint store. For a medium sized bottle cost me $30. I used it on my CJ cause the frame was all surface rust (it has to have rust to work). Looks like pepto bismo, you put on a couple coats with a paint brush and it turns the rust into a hard black primer. Indestructible, hard to grind off, seals it good and you can not weld near yet as it messes with your mig gas. It made the frame look like it was fresh off the showroom floor!

That's the odd thing about that MJ bed and frame. The frame and underside of the bed was totally rust-free. No surface rust or rot thru in the seams or bed floor. The actual rust was behind the flares and on the bed top rail where the prev. owner had a camper shell on it for a very long time - I suppose the dirt and moisture built up between the two surfaces. The truck was from Indiana so I was pretty surprised that it was in the decent shape it was. The cab floors were completely rotted - traffic signs were cut and just laid down under the rubber floor mats...... :laugh3:

I used it on my rock rails about 4 years ago. I used their "Metal Ready" IIRC. I also used a top coat, "Chassiscoat Black". POR brushes on nicely. However the top coats need to be sprayed on to not look like chit. It's held up well on my rails, just looks crappy with the brushed on top coat. And I wish I had gone with a gloss finish. The Chassis says it is semi, but is much more flat than gloss.

Like Yella said, it doesn't have cancer, but it does have a substantial amount of surface rust on the underside of the bed -- I did some reading and will be using the "starter kit" from POR-15 to clean and treat the whole underside, and make sure none of that crap from indiana gets any ideas of moving up through the structure. The one actual rust spot on the rail I am going to cut out and replace with a little piece of 1/8 metal -- its only about 3" x 8". The inside of the bed will get herc'd, so I should have pretty tight rust protection top and bottom.
