Pole Barn

Thinking about starting a pole barn build in my backyard this summer for vehicle parking. Anyone ever build one? Anyone interested in helping?

Im jealous I've never built one but after reading about the ones guys build on Pirate I will eventually build one...

Spend time up up front getting the grade right, and setting your corner posts. In particular, get your corners right, and a lot of other things will just fall into place.

I am thinking 30'x40' but I need to do some measuring once some more snow melts. I need to figure out truss spacing and design for snow loading. Also need to figure out possible placement for inside posts. It will initially be a dirt/gravel floor. My goal for this summer would be to get it framed and put a roof on it. I most likely will leave it open until next year.

Inside posts? You're not going to go clear span? There's no reason not to with a 30'x40'.

If I was gonna put up a building like that, I would look at a steel building. Sounds like you are thinking of building it in stages which obviously would be easier on the wallet.
If you can, I would go with tall side walls. You can easily make a loft at one end or on a side and put stuff under it and on top of it and really increase your storage space for larger items.
Keep an eye out for stores closing - stock rooms often have great shelves sometimes at great prices. I got 20 shelving units 2'x4' by 10' tall from a store in a local mall that closed. Just the shelves are a pile 6' tall (3/4" thick shelves, about 90 shelves). I also picked up 2 3'x10' by 6' tall racks from another store. very heavy duty, I have a dynatrac front 60 and a arb'ed CJ dana 30 sitting on one of the shelves - they were $80 for each complete unit.

I have built a few pole barns, and I could take a ride up to give you a hand.

My engineering ability scares me a little and I am huge fan of over kill.... I was thinking larger gaps on the inside and the posts shouldn't be in the way?

I appreciate the offer, and will definitely let you know when I get closer to getting started.

You should be able to engineering plans for your local conditions, pretty cheap. Might need a little extra work depending on where you want doors. Trust me, you will curse any posts in the middle of that pole barn.

I have built quite a few buildings including the one at my place. I have my trusses every 8ft with the 4x6 posts and used 2x6 trusses instead of 2x4. Like was said earlier you don't want a post inside a 30x40, and if you can go as high and as big as you can with the building. I only say this because my building started out as a 32x40 and is now 80' in length of the origanal building and the new building I just put to it is 40x60. Once you have a building they fill up quickly.

Running out of space again John? Didn't you just finish a shed? :)

Where is the proposed pole barn going to end up? In front (road side) of the shed? IIRC your septic would make behind the house an issue. What size doors are you putting on the front? 10' x 10' doors might be a bit tight with a man door on the same end and only 30' wide. I'm with the others, nothing in the middle. Span it.

Need something let me know we're only a short drive away.

Septic tank is in front of the house. I was thinking caddy corner of the top right side of the driveway. Shed is done but I was looking for garage parking for the jeep, truck, and infiniti. Alright, so no poles in the middle. I was looking at building it with 12' walls. I was going to do a 10x10 sliding door on the front and a separate door on the side of the side of the building. I will take a look at plans locally.
