If the guy owned an XJ he wouldnt care so much about letting the dog have a few teething marks on it.

Coastie...there's thousands of ignorant people in the world. It doesn't bother me at all that you're one of them. Hell...it's job security for me man.
I always like the argument that pits were bred to fight and, thus, they could come unglued at any given moment. I suppose the murderes of the world were all ancestors of the gladiators and just all of a sudden decided to revert back to their heritage?
Ralph...can I suggest that possibly you're sister-in-law and brother were not all that educated about dog behavior and, perhaps, weren't equipped to deal with a breed as head strong and powerful as a bully breed? I hear a lot of people say, "My dog will play fetch (or whatever) for hours" like it's necessarily a good thing. Fixation is NOT a good thing and it's not tolerated with my dogs at all (not in the house, not while walking and seeing a squirell...whatever). They play with their toys when I say they do and for as long as I say. My oldest knows better but the youngest one (now 5 months) will play with things past a point that I am comfortable with and then I take it away. Same with squeaky toys. Dogs don't play with them b/c they make a cute noise. It replicates an animal crying out. It's why none of my dogs have ever been allowed to play with them. Think about it dude....that dog had a reason for attacking and I can see what it may have been. Was it justifiable? Fawk no. But had that dog known who the fawk was the alpha that may not have happened. You may not know the details of the day to day life of that situation (I certainly don't). However...I just want to present to you that it's entirely plausible that there was a completely different dynamic going on that you or the owner had any incling to.
Joe...good for you. Looks like you're comfortable with the whole Yahoo Image search thing and can look up pictures of not only dogs but "Pitbull" dogs. I'm more impressed with your ability to multi-task and do a dual search for "Muzzled pitbull". You've got a real future ahead of you.
Do have any idea how many of Vick's dog's have gone on to lead healthy, gentle, and successful lives AFTER being rehabilitated?
So you are saying that genetics and breeding have nothing to do with a dogs characteristic traits? Is that why police use french poodles to sniff for drugs? Or why the blind use Chiwawas as guide dogs? These are animals that have been bred for a certain look, skill, intelligence, strength, temperament, aggressiveness or any number of traits. In Australia they needed a dog like a collie that could herd larger animals and withstand the harsh environment so they crossed a Collie with a Dingo and bred a Blue Heeler taking traits from both breeds that were useful to the task at hand. So it is all about how the dog was bred, the ancestors of the American Pit were fighting/hunting dogs and by the early 1800's here in American, today's American Pit Bull Terrier was bred for fighting mainly in Boston. I am sorry if you want to deny the fact that these and other breeds were bred to fight but denying the fact isn't going to change the fact.
I am not saying pit bulls are the only dog or domesticated animal that could hurt/kill and I am not saying that rearing has nothing to do with how a pit will behave later in it's life. But out of all the other breeds of dog they have the highest attack rate. Something on the order of 1 in 3 domesticated dog attacks are by pit bulls or pit mix breeds. I want you to try and find 5 states that have laws banning the selling and breeding of miniature Dachshunds.
I am guessing the two dogs that you own are pits? If you have trained them as well as you say then bravo to you and I am sorry if I offended you in my statement that pit bulls are weapons. My intent was never to offend pit bull owners or any one really.
I had one of those, walked with a limp, one eye, one ear and didn't run from anything. Somebody out walking there dog and he'd park his rear right in the center of the sidewalk and make them walk around. Most all of the neighborhood dogs learned to avoid him.My 6lb cat will fark up some pitbulls.

That's horrible. Two innocent tennis balls gone forever. The brute.Yes, he brutally destroyed 2 tennis balls today. Poor things never saw it coming.
I don't know...this is a subject that's always near to my heart. I work everyday with kids that are throw aways. They could be killed and no one but me would give a fawk or skip a beat. I look at my dogs/this breed the same way. My students aren't bad. They just need structure and consistency. I believe that every dog does (b/c it's a big liability/responsibility) but I go the extra mile with mine because I want the public to see them in a good light.
Hopefully no one is stupid enough to argue that any state has a ban on Dachsunds. Fortunately the undesirables are too fixated on "pits" and those owners don't have to worry. I think the part that disappoints me is when it's decided that it's best to just get rid of something entirely reather than try and find an appropriate solution. I'd like to think we live in a better world than that but sometimes I'm not sure.
And there was no offense taken.

From This site: Mixed breeds and not pure bred dogs are the type of dog most often involved in inflicting bites to people. The pure-bred dogs most often involved are German shepherds and Chow chows.
I've heard about Chows being somewhat aggressive in the past.
EDIT: Pits tend to be more damaging however. The breeds most often involved in fatal attacks are Rottweilers and Pit bulls. In the United States, pit bulls make up one to three per cent of the overall dog population and cause more than 50 per cent of serious attacks.
