Pitbull eats S2000

ive got a 6 yr old red nose pit. sweetest thing ever. timid at times even. when i have people over she hides in the closet.

I don't care what anyone says a pit is as much a weapon as a rifle or a hand grenade. They were bread to do one thing, to be a fighting dog. The same way a Blue Heeler was bread to be a cow herder, if you never let that Heeler see a cow or work a ranch he would still have a herding instinct. I know a lot of owners say that their pitbulls are loveable and loyal and that might be true but they could also revert to their orgianal instinct at anytime.
You got that right. My sister-in-law and her husband had a pit they raised from a pup. It was fixated on playing ball. It would play fetch for hours if you let it. One night after their routine daily round of playing fetch, they put up the ball and went to bed. A few minutes later, the dog jumped on the bed and attacked my sister-in-law and tore off half her scalp. The dog had no history of aggression and had never been abused. To this day, they have no idea what triggered the attack.

And THAT is why I've never owned one. Too many stories like that. i guess you never know when you pick a "bad apple".

Thats just ignorant. My brother has one, and his roommate's mother trains them. They are some of the coolest dogs ever. My brother's dog loves to cuddle with people, he will will constantly get up onto the couch with you and lay his head on your lap.
Some people just hear stories and get that in their mind. An example was that we were out on the beach one time over the summer, and these people stopped and were petting the dog, and saying how good he was behaved and how cute he was. After a while of petting him and talking, they finally asked what kind of dog it was, we told them, then they immediately stood up and backed away like the thing was going to attach them right there.

They were not bread to do one thing, some people are just bad people and train their dogs to fight other dogs.

What you're saying about reverting to their original nature could be said about probalby 90% of dogs. They were all wild at one point.

I usually get my dogs from the shelter. I feel that I have a pretty good sense about a dog’s temperament just spending a few minutes with one and I have succeeded in the past.
Last time there, there was not much of a healthy selection but they did have a few Pit-bull pups.
The staff girl showed them to me and we talked for a while about them. I ended up telling her that I wanted more of a family oriented dog and that I didn't feel Pits fit that profile.
She immediately got all hot and bothered by that comment and gave me her opinion, short of kicking me out of the place. Needless to say she was sick of the reputation everyone gave them.

That being said, I didn’t get the dog but it did give me some insight. I guess the only reason I didn’t get her was that I was worried about how she’d get along with my other dogs. That and I've heard too many stories myself about them.

Here's one for ya

Coastie...there's thousands of ignorant people in the world. It doesn't bother me at all that you're one of them. Hell...it's job security for me man.

I always like the argument that pits were bred to fight and, thus, they could come unglued at any given moment. I suppose the murderes of the world were all ancestors of the gladiators and just all of a sudden decided to revert back to their heritage?

Ralph...can I suggest that possibly you're sister-in-law and brother were not all that educated about dog behavior and, perhaps, weren't equipped to deal with a breed as head strong and powerful as a bully breed? I hear a lot of people say, "My dog will play fetch (or whatever) for hours" like it's necessarily a good thing. Fixation is NOT a good thing and it's not tolerated with my dogs at all (not in the house, not while walking and seeing a squirell...whatever). They play with their toys when I say they do and for as long as I say. My oldest knows better but the youngest one (now 5 months) will play with things past a point that I am comfortable with and then I take it away. Same with squeaky toys. Dogs don't play with them b/c they make a cute noise. It replicates an animal crying out. It's why none of my dogs have ever been allowed to play with them. Think about it dude....that dog had a reason for attacking and I can see what it may have been. Was it justifiable? Fawk no. But had that dog known who the fawk was the alpha that may not have happened. You may not know the details of the day to day life of that situation (I certainly don't). However...I just want to present to you that it's entirely plausible that there was a completely different dynamic going on that you or the owner had any incling to.

Joe...good for you. Looks like you're comfortable with the whole Yahoo Image search thing and can look up pictures of not only dogs but "Pitbull" dogs. I'm more impressed with your ability to multi-task and do a dual search for "Muzzled pitbull". You've got a real future ahead of you.

Do have any idea how many of Vick's dog's have gone on to lead healthy, gentle, and successful lives AFTER being rehabilitated?

i know several people who breed them, and I have never heard of any of them ever having an incident. They are great dogs.

If anyone is in the eastern NC area, I know of some people trying to give away a litter of non-registered pit bull pups, pure bred.

War dogs have been around since man had dogs. The Rottweiler and some other breeds.
Old school fighting dogs aren't war dogs, the breed was in the process of being ruined by breeders, trying to turn a fighting dog into a war dog.
You really have to understand the breed. Terriers are fighters by nature, though with most Terriers they would much rather fight another dog than a human. They'd rather hunt Rats and Foxes than fight another dog in most cases.
Many of the really good fighters aren't people dogs and take little or no notice of humans.
The absolute worst, most viscous dog I ever had was a Rottwieler/Beagle mix. The only thing that saved him from destruction was he never bit a child. Some breeds just shouldn't be.
In German, it is called Man sharp, Man sharp dogs should be culled if it gets excessive. But even then there is a place for personal protection dogs still.
Training will only go so far, breeding is actually a larger part of the process.
Condemning a whole breed is not smart, good breeding and culling is likely a better option.
They have been excavating some sites here in Europe from around the time when Homo Sapiens and the Neanderthal were both living in the same areas. The dogs that were kept in camp at that time, are a near relative of the Poodle, go figure.
I have a Terrier, about fifteen pounds, that will go through a chain link fence in minutes (not under or over or around, but through). He'd charge and attack most any other male dog on the planet, if I'd let him. He has never bitten any person that I'm aware of. Nature of the beast. You put a Rabbit or a Fox, another dog and a human in a field. He is going for the Rabbit or the Fox every time, no Fox, then the other dog, no Fox or Dog, he'll go look for mice, maybe drop by to say hello to the human if he gets bored. Typical Terrier.
Breeders breed for traits as much as for size etc. The breeders are screwing up, not the dogs.

You hit the nail on the head.

I agree with much of what you say, but I've seen people seriously screw a dog up, trying to train against it's nature and by forcing human values on it. Dogs and humans have parallel agendas and have been co existing forever. But at some point, or certain points, the agendas diverge. Kind of a partial symbiosis.
You can suppress some traits by training, but spiritually constipating a dogs nature IMO is as much abuse as beating one.

God River, you're such a damn hippy!!!

I agree with you. My dad's pit is one of the best dogs I've known, too bad he's dying (of old age, he's never attacked anybody and doesn't start fights with dogs, in fact when another dog picks a fight with him Hunter always does the bare minimum to defend himself instead of outright killing the other dog like he could.)

This turd (on the left), regularly takes down other dogs five times his size. We hunt in packs, sometimes thirty dogs. A dog has to be able to take care of himself. And run two hundred pound Boars out of the corn.

This is pretty much what a Pitbull or Bull Terrier was, before the breeders screwed it up.

Look ding dong, those pictures where posted as a joke, don't get all butt hurt and bent out of shape. Also, don't assume I'm an anti-pitbull person just because of a muzzled pit bull picture. :anon: And it was a Dogpile (ironic) image search anyway for "killer pitbull" at first but those pictures came up and where funnier than any roided out pit.

Oh yeah, and as far as me having a "real future" ahead of me, you have no clue how nice my future really is. ;) Don't Assume.

Does this make me anti bunny rabbit?

Now Joe....there's no need to resort to name calling now is there? Apparently I'm way off tonight. After looking back at your post...it's obvious that you are a fan of the breed and I can certainly appreciate that.

You're gonna do well for yourself. I can tell.

I prefer tree hugger. It sounds more festive.
