Pinion Bearing noise

I just bought a '00, and heard this is pretty common from someone that used to work in a jeep dealer. My question is how I can tell what rear axle is in it? I've read of D35's or a chrysler 8.25(I think).I can't remember what the 35 looked like in the YJ I just sold. I read '87 XJ's all had 44's. Also MJ's had 44's. I've read of most 44's having posi. How much of this is true, and am I better off upgrading to a 44. I now have a open diff and am contemplating a mini-locker while installing a complete bearing kit. What's more cost effective? I'll do the repairs myself(I'm a tech for a GM dealer). Although I hate to ask, Any opinions?

If you've got an 8.25, it's a 29-spline unit and is pretty strong - comparable to a D44 although it is limited to 4.56 as the deepest gear available.

An awful lot might have had them, however some did not. This was posted yesterday by Eagle. As for most haveing posi, I got a D44 outta an MJ for my XJ ( Some lite welding required ) Popped the lid on it today, and low and behold...doesn't look like a posi. But the gears did look new, and someone put new brakes and a pinion seal on it for me before they wrecked there rig.

Look hard, you will look long, but if your paitient one will cross your path. Took me about 5 months...

OH YEAH.. I'm a buyer for a wrecking yard. I look at a close to 2000 cars a month. I scrounge around here all the time for stuff, and there are things that are still VERY hard to find.. Paitience baby... thats the key!
