People that ask WAY over KBB for their Jeeps...

What's the limit that someone overprices their listing that you'll actually bother to contact them? Are they merely fishing to see if someone is stupid enough to bite? This example is $3k over book (a Jeep). It's what i want, but i'm not going to bother calling someone that's obviously delusional about what their vehicle is worth (i could get an 03 Rubicon for $16k). It's a Jeep...i doubt someone that's going to take it off-roading (me) gives two $hits that it's a "60th anniversary edition." Rant complete. Your thoughts?

$3K over which book? Retail or the online private party? If it's stock, of course that's way too much, but if it has a bunch of nice equipment that doesn't get an add in the book, then I guess it has to be evaulated on a case by case basis. You're right, if someone asks too much it slows down the number of responses to the ad, but that's their tough luck. One thing that I see people do many times is simply advertise for what their loan payoff is, in which case if it's too much they just won't ever sell it.

On the wholesale market, nice Jeeps bring very good money, which translates into them bringing more money on the retail market.........or vice versa, however you look at it.

Yep. Most of the Jeeps within 500 miles of me are listed anywhere between $2-3k over kbb and edmunds. I'm just looking for a stock vehicle...i'm not paying for someones "investment" in their Jeep.

Keep lookin' man and, be patient. There are are lots of good deals out there. I hate to see people buy in haste and screw themselves.

If you're looking to buy from a dealer though, you're going to have to pay more because of the work they put into them.

I agree...I've got nothing but time. I'm definately not going to rush into one that i won't be happy with. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for the right jeep from a dealer. If i bought one private party, i can pretty much count on spending $600+ right off anyways (tires, tune up, oil change, etc.).

It probably books for $2500. Damn, I'm a little over............

:D

Can i get your $.02? I found an 01 XJ Sport with 56k with the following mods. Price under $12k. That sounds like a good deal to me....what do you think? There were other mods...these were just the ones off the top of his head. It really does look like a good rig...not a hack job.

What do you think of this setup?
5.5 Rubicon Express Extreme Duty Lift
33" BFG Mud Terrains
15" Rock Crawler Wheels
Pro Comp Hydro Shocks
Front EZ Sway Bar Discos
Kennesaw Mountain Acessories Bumpers Front and Rear
Warn XD9000i winch
Auxillary Lights (rock lights)
Kevins Jeep Parts Rock Sliders
Huskey liners all the way around
CB and antenna
Aftermarket Leather
Optima Yellow Top
K&N style Hi-Flo air filter

I'm thinking that i'd rather just stay with the XJ idea. The TJ sounds cool but i know the lack of storage space would irritate me. I've been looking at the add for this one for a week or so now...i've been thinking about it.

I definately agree with you. I wouldn't take credit for someone else's work. It's the same price as a bone stock one. That's why it got my attention. The gearing is the main thing i'm not happy with...it still has the factory 3.55's. LP30 (not sure what that is)?

An 01' with under 60k for under $12k not a good deal (edmunds says $11,055)? I figured i could get some knocked off that. It had less miles than 90% of the vehicles listed and was about average on price. What do you think a fair price is? I'm not sold on it...so hammer away with the constructive criticism.

One other thing. It has leather/power seats :). I thought that was cool.

''BUILT NOT BOUGHT''

.02

It's nice to be proud of what you've done, but there's no getting around the fact that you can buy a built rig a heck of a lot cheaper than you can build one yourself, and save yourself a bunch of time and labor. You do it how you want, but if I had the chance to buy what I wanted from someone who already had a good start on it for a lot less money than it would cost me to do it, I'd jump all over it...........and then laugh at comments like yours.

Of course, I can't buy one like I would want it built.........but it would be nice. :)

You could probably buy that Jeep for somewhere around $10,000 if it was stock. The stuff that's on it cost way more than $2000, plus the effort to put it on, so sure it's worth $12,000 equiped the way it is. OK, so you still have to do gears, but the stuff that's on it is still worth plenty. If you want it, get it and don't worry about it.........IMHO.

BTW, I buy and sell used cars for a living. :)

If its the same price as a bone stock one and its what you want I'd say go for it...but...you may have to "unscrew" a lot of stuff once you actually get it home and start noticing the little stuff...just be ready for that.

Sounds like a good start saving thousands of $$$ of purchase and installation money for all the aftermarket stuff, what do you think the cost of all that stuff is??? $5k??? at shops around here you can spend $2k just buying a lift and having it installed...

also a 95 xj in Florida this year is costing more than a 95 last year on the wholesale market...even though the kbb value is a year lower...
BTW, I buy and sell used cars for a living.
Me too...

It does seem like a good deal. good lift, nice winch, probably still the stock low pinion dana 30. which is not as strong as the high pinion dana 30 offered up to 99.

I guess it would be a pride thing though. You could buy it and keep the good stuff and remove some things, add some things, still make it your own.

look at it this way. you start with a 9k dollar jeep and add 6k worth of stuff to it, guess what you got? no matter how you slice it you still only have a 9k dollar jeep. you may get half if your lucky for your mods if you find the right person. keep checking places like ebay and find exactualy what you want. even if you have to have it shipped its still not to high.

i was going to get a pretty decent looking YJ a while ago i saw sitting on the side of the road. i called the dude and he wanted $8400 bucks! i asked him if he was out of his mind and he got mad and hung up. the thing was bone stock and he said it needed a new carburetor.

I really get a kick out of working on my current XJ. I don't even like having someone else change the oil on it. Believe me, i definately agree that there's more satisfaction in doing a job myself. At least that way, you know the job was done right. For me, getting a modified vehicle is more a decision based on finances than laziness.

I'm just not willing to spend thousands on a vehicle solely for upgrade purposes anymore. I did that with my last two cars. I'd spent around $2,500 on one when the car was totalled. The second around $2,000 when i decided to get rid of it (i wasn't able to remove much). That wound up being money flushed down the toilet. These experiences would be what drives me to buy something that's already been modified (modified correctly...not a mis-matched hack job). In this case, the guy has $5,500+ in parts (i just did the math a few minutes ago).

The only thing that gets me at the moment is the gas...he said it gets around 11 mpg. I guess that's something i'll have to deal with if i want big tires and a lift (mine gets 20/25).
