Park Ranger Shot in Moab

damn, crazy people out there.

Not that it makes it any better for the park ranger, but I cant help but think of the negative impact this could have if the shooter was in a jeep

Authorities have confiscated and searched Arellano's 1999 silver Pontiac Grand Am, which was found parked in the brush several miles south of the shooting site.

no jeep. hopefully the ranger pulls through and they catch the guy...

Luckily he wasn't in a Jeep, he had been driving a Grand Am if I'm remembering the articles I've read right and he might have even been a local too.

'little confused at this. A Grand Am? He wasn't wheeling in that.
The shootout occurred after Young stopped a vehicle near the Poison Spider Mesa Trail southwest of Moab near the Colorado River.
Almost makes it sound like the ranger stopped a vehicle on the hard ball, or possibly on one of the dirt roads around the area. 'Don't think it has/had anythig to do with 4-wheeling except that it happened near Moab. I think they just included the trail name to supply a location.

'Hope the ranger recovers fully.

On the one hand it might be nice for them to catch this prick, Maybe get an answer to the question: WTF you think you doin' boy? On the other hand, it would save a lot of everyone's time and money if he just curls up somewhere and bleeds out.

I don't know if it's the same AP article I read, but they did not even mention Jeeps. Infact, at the bottom of the article, it noted that the poison spider trail was a very popular Mt Biking trail.

Shame about the Ranger. 99% of the Rangers I have met over the years were outstanding folks.

sorry, I should have been clearer.

What I meant is that as bad as this is, it could have been much worse for the offroad community if the shooter was in a jeep out on a trail instead of in a grand am on the road.

LOL...gotta love the mentality of a Jeep club.

The Poison Spider area is a huge recreation area for all kinds of people. Hikers, bikers, back packers and climbers. He could have been there for any number of reasons.

well since the mt bikers and hikers would be glad to see us go I can understand that mentality.

Some of the people that hike and ride also happen to own jeeps. I happen to fall in that group. I think the people that are into all types of outdoor activities are the most respectful of the land and what parts get used for which activities because they want to be able to continue doing each of them. I have had jeeps run on my mountain biking trails and it pisses me off because it gives us offroaders a bad name, and screws up the trails... Nevermind the fact that there was a forest fire one year and there were some big honkin' TSL tracks leading out of the woods.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic rant.

I hope the ranger lives, and I hope that bastard gets caught or dies evading the rangers.

Not all of them.

true, but as a group hikers and bikers, politically, are allied against those of us that prefer motorized transport.

anyway, this is not the thread for that discussion. Hopefully the assailant bleeds out and saves us all that money feeding him in prison.

Bikes are not allowed in wilderness areas either...

+1
I for one like to explore where I go in my jeep further on foot, as well as hiking. not all hikers are against wheelers.

This suspect attempted to murder Ranger Brody Young in the PSM Trailhead parking lot which is right off the highway. Trying to connect this to a hiker or biker or Jeeper is rediculous. My guess is that he crawled into a cave or overhang and bled out.
Could have been drugs, which make people do stupid stuff......and ruin the lives of innocent people. If Brody continues to recover, we may learn why the suspect took this action. Let's keep him and his family in our prayers.
