Buddy gave me a brushguard, got it mounted but its (i assume) chrome plated stainless. How can I paint this and have it stick? Would a normal scuff and spray work ?

Scuff and spray might....but I would not expect it to stick very well. Time for all those body shop XJers to chime in. Have you considered powder coating?

Chrome is harder than paint so whatever you apply over it will likely chip off the first time it meets up with an airborne projectile.

A local chrome shop should be able to reverse the chrome process, or you can have it sandblasted, then have it powdercoated.

It's all about how much free time you have and the $$ value you put on your free time, how much time/$$ you want to invest.

I wouldn't assume that the brushguard is stainless steel.

+1. The chrome has to come off or don't expect the paint to stick well even if you use an etching primer.

stainless is non ferrous, a magnet wont stick.

stainless is expensive, are you sure its stainless? if he was planning on having it chrome plated, having it made out of stainless is only a hastle/extra cost

There are some magnetic grades of stainless BTW.

It's not a matter of hardness so much as surface smoothness - regular steel is harder than paint too. The difference is how smooth the surface is and the chemistry involved... in this case I think it's more the smoothness. Polish a piece of regular steel to mirror finish and I doubt paint will stick to it very well either. So I think if you sandblast it, it should work pretty well.

That being said, if you sell it on craigslist you can probably get enough money to get one that came from the factory painted, which will probably last longer than any rattle can job you can do yourself.

You should look into getting it glass blasted.

BTW. what kind of brush guard did you get? Is it an oem mopar guard?
I've been trying to get my hands on one for a while.

This one Urban? I gave mine away years ago.

This forum is the only place I've ever even seen a stock brush guard. Do like the integrated lights on them. I wonder if they're deer-resistant...

I prefer the black bar with the lights as well, but I wouldn't refuse one in chrome without the lights. Chrome can be glass-blasted/ powdercoated something else.

I have serious doubts these bars are very practical, deer resistant or otherwise, but I still want one. I'm hooked on the rare oem stuff.
