Painted my trim yesterday

When I bought my XJ it had a fresh coat of wax and the trim was black. The previous owner said he'd used petroleum jelly to get the trim dark. After a couple washes, it was back to gray. Earlier this week I bought a couple cans of Krylon Fusion. I had used a different kind of plastic paint when I painted my ATV helmet a few months ago with mediocre results. The Krylon stuff is a lot better but I'm still not impressed with plastic paint. With the right prep and good paint, I've had good results on a variety of surfaces with standard spray paint. I don't think I'll ever bother with plastic paint again.

The Fusion can said to clean the surfaces to be painted with an ammonia-based cleaner.

The left hand piece I had tried to darken with a heat gun. It worked, but the color is inconsistent.

I taped as tight behind the trim pieces as I could to prevent overspray from getting behind them. I didn't want it on the body should I ever decide to just remove the trim pieces. I debated doing that this time but decided to leave them for protection from other doors in parking lots.

After doing the first side this way, I realized it was overkill. On the other side I just used two runs of tape.

The first coat.

Two good coats seemed to do well.

It took one can to do two coats on both sides and the rear corners.

If I had it to do over again, I think I'd use flat instead of satin. Other than that, I'm really happy with how everything turned out.

Looks great.

Thats the way to go, I did the same deal... After about 2 years I've just now started to notice some areas that need touch up. It never flaked off, I just have some tree / brush rub areas that scraped some spots. KRYLON FUSION FOR THE FRIGGIN WIN.

Thanks guys! Not that it was hard or expensive, but I'm glad to hear it holds up well.

The only other thing I've tested time with was some Chinamart knockoffs of Hella lights that I put on a light bar on my truck. They were chrome and rusted in short order, so I sandblasted the chrome off, put down two coats of Rustoleum primer and four coats of Rustoleum flat black paint. It's been around 6 years and they still look like I just painted them.

Hey Kevin, do you have any pics of how your trim looks now? All I can seem to find locally is either glossy or satin black and would like to know how the satin black looks after a few weeks. It looks pretty shiny, but that could just be because it's still a tad wet.

Anyone else who has used Krylon Fusion Satin Black paint to clean up their plastic trim pieces, please feel free to share your results as well. Thanks!

Patience and diligence are apparently virtues... I found flat black at Jo-Ann Fabrics and got the driver side done yesterday (sorry, was too dumb to take a "before" pic):

This is approximately 18 hours after painting. I think flat black actually looks fantastic, can't wait to do the rest of the trim.

i heat gunned all of my trim and it looked good for about 2 months but now its starting to run through and get faded again. the trim on my drivers door is comin off too i need to pull it all the way off and re tape it.
anybody got pics of no trim?

I was foolin with the fender flares on the 01 today and decided that in addition to painting the black trim on the sides, I'm gonna paint the white scraped(or else it's the white primer under the red) red flares black as well. I'm glad this resurfaced, cause I will be buying flat black.

when i used krylon fusion i didnt even do much surface prep, and 3 years later it just has a few chips around the ends where it has hit stuff... i was pretty impressed.

No trim w/ U-pol Raptor spray on bedliner

The only negative thing I have to say is that it makes my bumper end caps look terrible. Not only does it look better it combat some of the rust on my rockers, I was able to do both sides throughly (underneath too) w/one 1/4 the supplied material. Prep took 5X the spray time. Highly reccomended :spin1:

Very nice job BTW thats a good Idea and just what I am looking to do on my bumpers endcaps

What did you paint in this pic? those fender flares are not flat black. and the plastic trim looks grey

Yeah it does look kinda gray. I am debating using the Krylon Fusion to do the same thing but I can't decide whether I should use the flat black or the satin. The satin is too shiny for my taste but the flat black looks more gray than black. Has anybody had any experience with the Krylon Camouflage? I saw it at the Checker by my house and it comes in "Ultra-Flat" black.

what i did was have napa make me some spray cans of my paint code and then i sprayed em. They turned out good.
