Gutter Mount Roof Rack Slipping Off, Ripping Off Trim?

I’m installing a Garvin roof rack with gutter mounts, but the mounts just don’t seem right to me. They pull up on the gutter trim, and the trim already slipped off on one side. I don’t trust the other side to not slip off when it’s bouncing around offroad. If I push the brackets all the way inboard, they just slide back out and up as I tighten them. Does this look right? Am I supposed to remove the trim pieces?

I think the bracket aint shaped right for your roof. That bracket needs to extend further inwards maybe move the part on top that the threaded rod passes thru inwards. cut and weld

or... maybe bend the bracket at where the rob is welded to it. use a big vice and big hammer.

that bracket should contact the body further inwards, not only the rain gutter

For off roading this needs be very secure.

i mounted a basket on my rig using three Yakima bars, their brackets extend inwards well inboard of the gutter it survives some VERY rough rock crawling.

I think the mount on this rack is just a bad design. I can't move the inner mounts any further inboard. It came off another XJ, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure it had the trim pieces on the gutters. Either way, I'm going to make some new brackets that go under the lip of the gutter and have two bolts pulling them inboard and one pulling up, so I can adjust vertical clamping and inward forces separately. I did some googling and everyone has a solution to this except Garvin. There's just no way that the design on here will stay put offroad, especially if I whack a sizeable tree branch with it.
