Opinions: Mud Tire vs. A/T

Ordering new tires here in the next few days.

Just wondering, Should I go with another M/T or back to the A/T's?

My Jeep Uses:
Wheeling maybe 5-10 times over the summer and usually 1-2 each winter
Transportation To and From school When snowy
Use to Deliver Pizza's on snowy nights

My understanding of the tires.
M/T's will only get about 30k miles, while the A/T's will be high 40k's. (How true is this?)
A/Ts are better in Snow While M/Ts are better off-road
M/T's are LOUD on the freeway (compared to a A/T)
M/T's are more expensive

Would you say that its worth it to get the M/Ts?

I just picked up a Mickey Thompson Baja MTX for use as a spare tire. It's a really aggressive A/T.

I'm running MTZ's right know, but the MTX might be perfect for your needs.

I'll second that favorable opinion of the MTX. Great looking A/T tire.

If my rig were a daily driver AND driven for work, I'd have to go with A/T's.

The MJ I'm putting together will have A/T's for the simple reason it'll see daily use with lite occasional trail use....... when I'm not in the mood to take the XJ.

Thats what I needed to hear! I'd say that is a good point. Thanks for the tire suggestion, but i'm going retreads either way. By my calculations, its a little less then half the cost with the M/T's and exactly have with the A/T's.

My XJ is my daily driver, so I've always ran an AT. Recently I picked up some 16" wheels and MTR's from a Rubicon, and man they are nice on the trail, I forgot how much better, a good MT is off road than AT's. I've only taken them up to our cabin, which is basically a logging road, but there are a few decent grade switch backs that I would always spin tires on when I had my AT's (even with rear locker) in 2 wheel drive. With the MTR's I never slipped once. Despite being my DD, i'm really leaning towards the Cooper STT's. GY Dura tracs are also high on the list, and have GREAT reviews in the Mud and Snow, for an AT.

A/Ts are better in icy conditions.

X2 that's why the Dura Tracs are still in the running for me, decisions decisions.

DuraTracs are supposed to be FANTASTIC in snow. I didn't like their look at first, but they've grown on me.

Most Mud Terrains are terrible on slippery pavement. All Terrains generally have at least some siping (the little line lookin' grooves cut into the lugs) which helps substantially on slippery pavement and snow.

Ask JeepFreak2010, he is running Duratracks and loves them. They are kind of a cross between a M/T and an A/T, the big lugs have tons of siping in them.

Glad you said "most" because I would have to correct you on that. Love my current BFG M/T KM2's they were awesome this last winter and didn't have any issues on pavement slipping at all, even with a rear locker which tends to fish tail you on slippery ice and snow. I also daily drive 40+ miles a day for work. So far they have done me no wrong offroad either, specially aired down.

Now my Previous BFG M/T had issues and I had to have them siped to add that extra grip for the winter.

Then there is the Truxus M/T that I will swear by them as one of the best damn tires for traction on snow, ice and offroad on the rocks. They just are so soft that they do not last long.

That's what I hear, and allegedly they are supposed to be VERY impressive in the mud as well, not that I see much mud anyway. The Dura Tracs have TONS of siping, and the tread is spread out nicely, along with not having the "inter locking" design like the BFG's i've ran in the past (causing them to not clean out as well). The BFG's were good on the ice, for an off road tire, but they were HORRIBLE in the deeper snow. I'm all about "proven designs", but as long as the BFG AT has been around, I think it's time for some evolution, and the Dura Trac brings that to the table.

^^^ this on ALL accounts. I've never owned a set, but i've driven a friends rig with them in the snow, and they are AWESOME. These would be a no brainer, if it weren't for the short tread life. They also used to be a fairly cheap tire, but have gone up recently.

Hopefully JeepFreak will chime in on the GY DT's.

I have had mine for two years or longer... and I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. if you take care of them the wear down nicely! I drive a lot too and still have plenty of tread on them.

You lucky, cause I got barely 1 1/2 years out of them.

I did not have any bad wear just all wore down fast and lost most of my tread. I did a review of them: Traildriven review

Re-reading my review I forgot about the chunking of the treads off-roading.

Still I had a good experience with them specially for all around traction on the street. Zith runs them as well in the 33" flavor.

I've had good experiences with the Pro Crap Xtreme All Terrains. Not too loud on the highway, smooth on the road, and pretty good in dirt/mud/rocks

Its sounding like an A/T is the better option for me?

Search around on the web and see what you think of those tires I just showed ya. They have the road characteristics of ATs with the offroad characteristics of MTs.

SO back to the original question...

My rig is a daily driver and I will run nothing but MT's! That is how I like it because they work best for me. You will have to decide for yourself because only you have your driving habits! If money is an issue get an AT but if money is not a major factor then a good MT will be the better choice! Asking about tires here is like asking an alcoholic what his favorite drink is! If you are looking for a really good all around tire that wears like iron but is great offroad then there are only a few good choices. I have always loved BFG, excellent tire! I have however been awestruck by the Nokian tire and you really should take a hard look at it!!

I've run a few different AT tires and the ones that held up the longest performed the best on road off road winter driving rain still hands down the BFG AT's KO's longest miles side wall cuts no problems they just hold up really well.

With that said yet I haven't tried them only seen them in person and a few guys like the new wrangle AT really half mud half AT looking tire. That might be my next tire of choice.

I run the 35x12.50R15's of these (I was told that size was discontinued though). Decently priced, they have a deep tread and perform really well on wet pavement and in snow. I didn't even air down on Chinaman's Gulch (35 PSI) and went up slickrock that people thought I wouldn't be able to... they're okay in the sand. They absolutely SUCK in the mud though; true lockers front and rear are the only reason I've gotten out of wet dirt/sand situations, although technically I've never had to winch or be pulled.

Best of luck in your decision.
