Operation Overcompensation

I was thinking that would help me out with my over all wsm~wsm measurment.. I am looking for a total of 61" so what ever the outer wsm to inner "C" at the axle tube is would tell me if my tubes are in the ball park without having to mock the whole front end up... since I forgot to take measurments of your housing while it was here...

To throw another wrench in things, the WMS on the Chevy rotor and the Ford rotor are different. Maybe 1/2" + different.

Plus measuring WMS is a pain in the ass because you cannot ever get a strait line with all the crap in the way.

Don't worry. We'll figure it out.

Call me and we can do something.

It's 8:30 and I've still got to tack weld it in place

It is midnight and I just called it a night.

Got the pinion angle set. The drive shaft is going to have to be quite a bit shorter.
FileHandler.ashx

Got everything tacked in place and loaded in the Expedition to be taken to the be TIG welded tomorrow.
FileHandler.ashx

Tomorrow it gets paint and brake lines and maybe installed.

Saturday, February 4th

Missed Saturday because my crappy pic hosting was down.

Getting places. Axle all welded up.
FileHandler.ashx

Thanks Ron!

Finished product was great
FileHandler.ashx

Dragged it home and painted it.

Called it an early night and spent the rest of the evening with Mei.

Sunday, Feb 5th

Got up early this morning and the axle was dry.

This thing is so fawkin heavy. I have to work on it like this or I cannot move it myself.
Started to put the axle together. Filled the diff wioth 3.75 quarts of fluid.

FileHandler.ashx

Dragged iot under the XJ and started to bolt it up.
FileHandler.ashx

Did an errand and when I got back I finished pitting the axle together. Brake lines, lights, brakes, bleader, the whole thing. Did I ever mention flaring tools suck donkey balls?
FileHandler.ashx

Since I was having SO much fun with the flaring tool I decided to finish the front master cylinder brake lines. I hate that fawkin thing.
FileHandler.ashx

Tomorrow after the M&G I will bleed the whole system and watch all my flares leak

Avery is not the tool but how you use it. :D

I'll be visiting you soon to fix them when they leak ;)

Monday, Feb 6th

Nothing. Took a break and went to the M&G.

Avery, should your lift blocks be at least the same length as the spring perch to utilize the anti-wrap feature of those longer perches?

Ideally. I am looking for some currently.

1.5" if anyone has any ;)

Tuesday, Feb 7th

Calling it an early night.

Got discouraged since I cannot get my tire set on the beadlock. I guess I have to go and get better bolts and do a little reading on the 'best' way to install it.

I had originally hoped to drive it to work tomorrow and then to Calico but it is not looking good. Still have to bleed the brakes and get a rear driveshaft made.

It is now a three-wheeled monster. The 4th tire I couldn't mount and the spare is coming in next week :tears:

FileHandler.ashx

Took a measurement under the rear axle and it looks like I have 12" of clearance under the 60. I gained 1.5" of clearance from when I had the 8.8 on worn out 35s (10.5" clearance).

What kind of trouble did you have? Maybe getting the outer bead of that 37" MT/R set inside the ring? Hammer, hammer, hammer.....

Just did one this week. Don't know why this one was so hard, don't remember the others being hard. After getting fine thread rather than course bolts (glad I didn't force them at all), and the tire being a bitch to mount up, when I went to air it up the f'n valve stem was bad.

Yup. I actually got the outer bead set with a 12" bicycle tire lever but then could not compress the ring onto the tire enough with the 1.5" bolts. After looking at my three other wheels with the tires mounted, I cannot beleive how big the bead is and that is actually compresses that much inside the bead lock. :dunno:

Wed, February 8th

Took the rear driveshaft to be shortened today and have new Spicer U-Joints placed in it. When I came home I measured my spare front driveshaft, tried it and it works perfectly in the rear. I am pretty excited because now I only have to carry one driveshaft and it will work front and rear.

I have heard people using fronts drivelines in the rear many times but is there ANY reason not to?

Clearance and pinion angle looks decent. Like the muffler and cat? Sounds like a tin can with rocks in it :laugh3: I have a stock exhaust 'cat-back' I need to install.

Bled the brakes tonight. Took no time. Everything was fine except the two lines going into the top of the prop valve. The bends look like shit there too but I actually think I just need to tighten them. Since the engine was warm, I will try to tighten them tomorrow.

My list of stuff to do has gotten shorter on this latest project.

To Do List:
1. Install new u-bolts and grind the top plate for the rear axle (didn't have them until today)
2. Route air line and diff bleeder for the front axle.
3. Mount 2 new MTR tires on the bead lock rims
4. Rebuild transfer case with wide chain, 2 Lo kit, 4:1, and Novak shifter knob (no go on the Atlas)

After all that is complete I need to test out the vehicle, make sure the bump stops are 'ok' on the front by flexing it out. Then I need to get into the steering and the OBA. So far it looks like the PSC Gear Box and pump and possibly the ram if I can figure out the best way to mount it.

Sunday, Feb 12th

Friday, Feb 10th = NOTHING

Saturday, Feb 11th = went to Calico to see the group but no work done

Sunday, Feb 12th

I didn't get out of bed until 1:00 but I actually got some stuff done. I started out the day by popping the front diff cover off to draining it since the gasket was not working to seal the fluid inside. Then, for some reason, I felt compelled to clean off all the paint from the diff cover. I sealed it on, painted the diff guard, and then the cover. I finished it up and filled the diff.

I then installed the new u-bolts and re-drilled the top plate for them on the passenger side (I had done the drivers side last week).

Then I yanked the transfer case, which I had never done before. When I did the SYE I just did it under the vehicle. It was not too bad but the damn exhaust made it harder.

ThumbHandler.ashx

Thn I drained it and then took it apart. Tomorrow I will clean it up and start getting it ready for the 4:1, 2LO and HD Chain conversion.

Monday, Feb 13th

Got all the parts cleaned and ready to be re-assembled

Tuesday, Feb 14th

Valentines Day!

No XJ work done but I am two ouces lighter ;)

Wed, Feb 16th

Assembled the trasfer case. Everything went together well. Unfortunately there is a small issue with the Neutral position. I will look into it tomorrow.

Got to love bicycle tools. This is a headset press. Comes in handy pressing in misc bearings.
