Ok, so I got a Droid........ What apps do you like?

Troy,

I thought for sure you'd install "PoliceLight" .. Pretty sweet I have to say, I just can't come up with a reasonable use for it! Maybe you could use it for a backup in case the lights on the cruiser malfunction? (The phone could become an unreimbursed employee expense!)

I was just issued an HTC EVO for work, it's replacing an iPhone that's 2 years old but still going strong.

I have to say, the android OS is much nicer than Apple's OS. I had to jail break my iPhone just to change the stupid sound file for incoming mail! In my opinion, Apple is suffering from rectal cranial inversion but they're taking it to the bank! I also use a macbook for work and love it, but the iPhone and iPhone-OS are showing their age.

Anyhow, my favorite apps on the new phone include:
Tricorder (really geeky!)
Klondike (Solitaire)
Terminal (I'm a Unix guy by occupation)
Compass

I need to do more digging myself!

Rob

Anybody running a rooted droid? My buddy has all the stuff to root, but im still on the fence.
"Rooting" an Android phone means effectively hacking the O/S to gain elevated privileges. It allows you to install other stuff that is normally not available, such as WiFi tethering.

PDAnet does not require rooting the phone, but does require a USB cable to tether, as well as installing a client under Windoze. WiFi tethering allows me to connect *ANY* other WiFi device to the 'droid.

Yeah, I have the "Police Light"....... I use it to pull over inmates in the hallways...... :dunce:

Troy - Have you been to the Droid life website? I haven't been there for a while but it usually is up to date with current issues. I'll admit they are Droid nut huggers but sometimes you can find fixes and cool downloads.

Droids basically run a Linux OS, so Rooting is like having admin acces to a windows based OS. You can overclock the processor, load different programs etc. Its pretty common anymore and my buddy has all the stuff to convert it back to stock if something needs to be done warranty wise.

He was running the new Froyo 2.2 (unreleased) but went back to 2.1 this morning cause of some stability issues. He has his processor running a 1g with out a hitch.

Yeah, still just not real happy with it's function as a phone. Answering calls is a total pain in the ass as you can't just tap the screen, you gotta press and drag the incoming call icon..... Same to silence it.

Truely, this phone is amazing for everything except being a phone.

You have to mash the damn thing against your face and put the microphone as close to your mouth as possible in order for people to hear you. Your ear gets irritated as the phone case design leaves alot to be desired for comfort.

We're going back - again - Friday and probably going back to flip phones. Hard to justify well over $100 a month for a pair of phones that irritate us and the folks we talk to so bad.

<scratches head> I won't disagree that "unlocking" the screen does take a little getting used to. My Droid rings, I drag the unlocker (no press required on mine,) and the call is answered.

Can't explain the sound problems. Mine has been pretty nice, although at least half the calls are through a Bluetooth earpiece.

Agreed, the phone function of the droid is a major PITA. With that said, I think I only logged 14 minutes of total talk time on my last billing cycle. I just DO NOT talk on the phone very often. I use text and data ALOT tho, so the phone function doesn't bother me much.

If this were just a personal phone, I'd be a bit more accepting of it I suppose, but being a business phone....... I just can't have folks saying "What was that?" or asking me to repeat myself over and over.

My wife called me yesterday while driving home using her droid on a bluetooth earpiece and I could hardly understand a word - very broken and lots of background noise. Some improvement when she took the bluetooth out of the mix, but still not great. She's pissed because her friends don't want to talk to her when she calls using her droid.

Kiefer called me yesterday a few times and surprisingly, I could hear him ok.... dunno how I sounded to him though, forgot to ask.

did your droid get my picture last night?

Yeah....... you pitching a tent in the front yard. Ewww. Don't ever do that again.......

:D

One of the calls i could barely hear you and it was not clear at all. But the others i could hear ya just fine. Very weird. But in the jeep its very hard to hear anyone with all the noise it makes. I usually don't talk on the phone while I drive though.

Yeah, I just don't know. Call quality has been REAL inconsistent. Talked to my mom yesterday as well - she lives in Estes Park and usually phone quality for any cell phone is crappy, but it was about as clear as it's been.......

The other thing is that I'm kinda getting into this texting thing........... Yeah, I know. But the text function on this Droid is real easy - it has a window that puts up common words as you type that match the first part you're typing and you can then just tap the word to insert rather than having to type it all out......

I'll be back to my hate for texting if I get a small flip phone again.

Yes, there's a few.

Before picking any one of them, I'd do some surfing on the Droid forums and see what the major complaints are. Verizon encouraged us to go with the motorola Droid as the Droid Incredible has been getting returned quite a bit for operating system issues and app failures...... according to the sales gal anyway. Plus, the Incredible currently has a 4 week wait just to get 'em. She never mentioned the Droid X.

There are a bunch of Android phones. Motorola has the Droid, Droid X, and probably the Droid 2 around the end of the years. Oops... tried to forget the Backflip (MotoBlur for social networking.) HTC has several, like the Incredible (and is probably the single biggest Android handset manufacturer.) Google's Nexus One has been officially discontinued.

I was considering getting the nexus one. But couldn't justify spending 500 dollars on a phone. So I spent 85 and got my G1. I think the best phones that have the android OS are the HTC's. Only problem I have really had with my phone is it goes slow when my text box has over 2000 texts in it (sent and received). And my battery had died about 2 weeks ago. Found one online for cheap and its working great and the battery lasts twice as long. Think my next phone will probably be the mytouch slide with the 2.x firmware rather then the 1.6 blech. And I believe it can teather as well.
