Thought Id start a new thread for this since I didn't find one. Anyone using an odyssey battery? I just got one but it fits funky: to small for the tray and the lockdown bar doesnt really fit at all. Anyone know of any aftermarket products or ideas of how to lock it down? I do hope I got the right battery…jeep starts great….ideas??

Well I think I have gotten the wrong battery. Does anyone know which battery would be ideal? I see extreme series and performance series. I also see 34-PC1500, 34R, 34M, and 34/78 (1500). Each of those is offered in extreme or performance. A bit confusing…

i run the pc1500, fits great...the 34 and 34m and 34/78 are the sizes, not the part number from odyssey.

Which battery do you have?

34/78 is generally the size for XJs.

Just a plain ol' 34-PC1500, no special marine-ness, dual terminals, etc, just one kick ass battery.

If your near a big town, try more than one oddysey dealer, the first one i went to tried to charge me over $75 over their 'web price', for the curtesy of loading into my own truck. The second place i went to was miles above in the service department, and gave me one hell of a price. So they must give their retailers a wide berth on retail prices.

Id bet your 'undersized' oddyssey is strong enough for your xj, depending on which one you went with. I go camping alone quite a bit, so i need maximum reserve, but if I allways went with a crowd, I would definately consider using a smaller battery for logistics.

IIRC, the Sears Die Hard "Platinum" is basically an Odyssey/Stinger battery.

Yes, my undersized battery is starting fine, but I'm going to exchange it for a 1500. The 1200 just fits weird. Is the marine version not recommended? It's only like $20 more here, and the guy at the store is telling me its better. Is this true? I don' t know a whole lot about batteries. My heep is my daily driver. I drive in the snow often. I am also considering a long trip to mexico- and want a solid battery.

To be specific, the Odyssey marine is a dual-purpose battery. It seems to have the exact same specs as the other odyssey 1500 series batteries, but with additional terminals. Are they all basically the same? Does anyone have any opinions/experience with this setup. I have read a lot about pure marine deep cycles not being a good fit for autos. This is a DP so what do people think...thx much

DUal purpose should be fine. And for autos, a starting battery is a must. A deep cycle would be fine if it was used in addition to a starting battery. But a DP will be fine..

Just got this back from Enersys. For whoever else may be interested:

Hello RH,

Thank you for contacting EnerSys/ODYSSEY.

The PC1500 series models are all the same basic battery with different terminal configurations and marketing labels. All ODYSSEY batteries are dual purpose for both cranking and deep cycling. The Marine 34M-PC1500ST is commonly used in automotive applications due to the top post dual terminal configuration for auxiliary loads.

Understand that most alternators are not meant to be deep discharge recovery chargers so monitoring of the battery to determine if external charging is required or an upgraded higher amp alternator would be beneficial. The battery can take up to 300A and prefers a charging voltage of 14.4-14.8V. If the battery’s resting voltage 8-24 hours off charge, including alternator charging, is at least 12.84V then the system is charging the battery to a full state of charge based on your usage and the amount of driving you are doing. If not, the battery will fail prematurely due to consistent undercharging or being maintained in an undercharged condition. For vehicles that are not daily drivers, parasitic loads over time can became an issue as well.

I hope this helps. Sincerely,

Kathy Mitchell

Going to monitor it and do a bit of searching on here. But I'm assuming our alternators will be ok..?

I just finished mounting my PC1200 if you needed ideas. It was kind of tricky, but I fabbed a tiedown strap out of scrap 1/4" stock and used two of those bolts (all thread like) that are used in the stock spare tire mount. The tray was a stock tray cut in half with some hacking, riveting, and flat strap strengthening.

Also, our alternators are fine for bigger batteries.

The required charging voltage caught my attention. My XJ only get to 14.2V at the first start on a cold morning. It usually stay about 13.8V all year long, a little less on a hot day measured at the battery. My Optima batteries purchased in 2009 need to be replaced soon. I have to begin my research now.

To be honest, my agm charger only hits 15+ volts on deeply discharged agm batteries. That sounds like misinformation.

The guy i bought my odyssey from laughed when i asked if i "needed a special charger like i SUPPOSEDLY need for an optima"... we both laughed. He had multiple special agm chargers on the wall he could have tried to sell me, but he still laughed....

No need for special chargers, no need for calls to enersys, no need for any of that...
