OBD Scanner- Open/Closed loop

Which OBD scanner is anyone using that displays open/closed loop? Does it change and show the status of the open/closed loop?

I have a Actron CP9180 (OBDII) that shows live data, including open/closed loop activity.

They don't sell the CP9180 anymore. Replaced by more expensive models.

All you'll need is an OBDII scanner for your '98. Don't waste money on OBDI/II scanners, or scanners that display in foreign languages.

I have 4 different scanners, 2 wired and 2 wireless/bluetooth thru the android and none show specifically open/closed loop status. No foreign language for me.

I found some Actron.
9180 ebay $50+ to $160NIB
9185 $215
9190 $283
9145 $140

I will try for the 9180.

What about a 9580 for $100? any good?

My Innovate LM-2 shows open loop ON or OFF. When ON, the fuel trims do not change(and the fuel trim display stays at the previous value), and when OFF, they do change(cause the pcm is using the o2 data), so even scanners that display fuel trims can give you a clue. Do you have a wideband o2? If not, then I highly recommend the LM-2 as a wideband o2/obd2 scanner/datalogger in one package.

I have the Innovate MTX series.

I have Torque on my phone and use it. How do I see Open/Closed Loop?

DRB lll starting at $2k!!

Do I need Torque PRO?

Do I need Torque PRO?

Most likely. Definitely worth the money. You have I believe 15min to "return" the app. So, I would say buy it, try it. and if it doesnt work then you can "return" it if you want.

That was it, Torque Pro has it, $5. Best deal out there. Thanks.

I was going to recommend Torque. I downloaded the app on my phone tonight. Ordered my bluetooth obdII adapter also. Should be rocking it this week sometime. Can't wait.

From what I have read I might as well buy the pro version.

I have used a ScanGuage for years to monitor the OBDII outputs.
It can be moved from car to car easily. Mounted with Velcro, it sits nicely on top of the steering column, at the base of the instrument panel.

OBD bluetooth adapter <$20 at Amazon and Torque pro $4.99. No cable and better screen-your cell phone. I have both and prefer the wireless.

I disagree with your on-off open loop closed loop statement. The computers use the O2 sensor(s) data in closed loop all the time (if everything is working right). The fuel trims are static and the O2 sensor reading is usually static in cruise (except for a tight range bounce above and below stoich), constant speed mode or idling in open loop.

I think STFT changes when you move the gas peddle? As does the O2 sensor data during decel or accel even in open loop. Hard to write hard fast rules, unless you spell out what is working properly first.....

Mine shows the LTFT, STFT, open and closed loop if you have the extra software upgrade, and start the right menus.

I agree EcoMike. I use an ELM327 bluetooth adapter and Torque Pro. It has a 'fuel status' display that shows 'open or closed' loop instantly in real time. Best tool.
Actually getting into 'open loop' is harder than you thought. There seems to be a combination of MAP, rpm, throttle position, and I'm sure a few more parameters involved. MAP seems to take priority and overrides the other parameters when it reads less than 1" vacuum and close to 0. The hard part is that on a Naturally Aspirated or forced induction where the MAP only sees vacuum, rarely sees MAP less than 1-2"vacuum and it is sometimes 'difficult' to get into 'open loop'.
