OBD II Code P0340 and P0344

2005 Jeep Wrangler X - 53k- I6 - MT

My check engine light came on on the ride home from work...figured it was a loose vacuum line because my cruise control would not work. However, it would downshift very roughly.

When I got home, I turned it off and tried to start it again- nothing. Just cranking. I did the key trick and got the following codes P0340 and P0344. Looks like they are camshaft position center related??? Any thoughts since they appear to be the same code? 53k and I am all ready losing one??

Anything else you can tell me about these codes???

PO 340 is no cam sensor signal (that's the one inside the distributor), but I can't find any reference anywhere to PO 344. You might want to try rereading it to see if you got some wrong blinks, though this would not be the first time a blink code came up that had no cross reference.

If it's running, it might be something else, and I'd start by just disconnecting/reconnecting every plug you can find, making sure all contacts are clean, and perhaps trying to clear the code and see if it recurs.

One trick I have found on OBDI Jeeps (I've had two lose the cam sensor), which may or may not work with yours is to turn on the ignition, and with ignition on, engine off, pull the plug on the distributor and then replug it. This will allow an OBDI Cherokee 4.0 to start, just that once, and run, although not very well owing to scrambled injector timing. Every restart will require the same procedure, and it may run poorly or overheat if you go more than a few miles. But if the vehicle is not starting, and this allows a start, it's diagnostic, as well as being a way to limp home.
