Hello, I know this topic is asked about a lot and I searched, but just wasn't able to find the info I needed. I am in the process of registering my Jeep in NY State, it was reg. in Cali. Its a 98XJ, 5.5"RE lift, 33's, rigidco bumper and of course a bunch of other doo-dads. I need to know what the law is about flares? I'm pretty sure i'm ok as far as lift laws right(and height)? but right now i have no flares. my wheels have 4.5"BS so they don't stick out too far. will i be ok if i put the stock flares back on? or do i need bushwackers to pass inspections? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I spoke with the NY state traffic squad to confirm this, there is no law in NY about tire coverage only total width

I dont think you will have a problem, even with the stock flairs, NYS does an odbII check, brakes, horn, lights, wipers..... if the tires are reasonably covered and the shop is cool it shouldnt be a problem, to make it easier try and find a 4x4 friendly shop. As annoying as NYS vehicle rules are they arent as bad as Mass, or Ct. You can download a pdf off the nys dmv website with passenger vehicle requirements, that will have stuff like bumper height , etc listed. check it first before you go, and like I said find a friendly shop.

Where in NY are you? There are no fender laws in NY as long as the whole tire isn't sticking out. I pasted last year with no flares and 3.75 bs wheel and 33 x 12.5 tires. If you are near the Queensbury/Saratoga area, go to Autoworld Jeep off exit 17 on the Northway I87. Their service shop is all jeep guys and the lead mechanic wheels with us, a bunch of cool guys.

I'm down in NYC, Manhattan actually. My jeep stays in Jersey most of the time. This is great news about the laws. Doubt there are any 4x4 friendly places, but it could also be helpful simply because they don't see many (if any) lifted jeeps. Thanks guys for the help!

Bert, if you want to take a ride, there are a couple of shops up by me one in Brewster, Putnam Co. and one in Pawling, Dutchess Co, the guy in Pawling specializes in Toyotas, but is highly 4x4 friendly and does good work to boot. both are about 45 min to an hour from NYC

thanks for the help, just got a PM from someone in NYC and he gave me a tip on a place in Manhattan. I'll try them out and hopefully everything will go well. appreciate all the help fellas.
