Nose issues

I'm going out on yet another limb here:

I was amazed at the dryness when I moved to Colorado. Now I'm not afraid to use a little lotion after my morning shower. But for the past 2 winters I have gotten these KILLER sores inside my nostrils. Right now I've had one in the right nostril for about 3 days. It's so fawkin bad that it hurts to touch the outside of my nose.

I usually just tough it out and they go away in a week or so. I decided to research it a bit and I found out that I have what appears to be a bacterial infection that is supposed to be quite common in the fall and winter. I was amused when I read that it is caused by a bacteria that is found on the fingertips. :dunce: You know what means. That's right...Doctors recommend NOT putting your finger in your nose. Well what the hell am I supposed to do when I'm bored? Seriously...Missouri is good for one thing...humidity. Out here my nose is dry like the Sahara. I gotta clean house once in a while. You can't even blow these boulders out. You gotta use manual labor. So now I'm in a bit of a pickle. I need to go to the Doctor tomorrow and tell them to give me something to kill this beast. Maybe I'll try and get some finger condoms so I can use universal precautions when diggin'?

Damn dry air. That's all. AND I gotta go back to work tomorrow. Those 2 weeks FLEW by. Keep yer fingers outta your noses.

I get the dry nose too. Vaseline brutha. If you have a bacteria, the Dr. might be suggesting Neosporin - I've used that too. Both work well and keeps the nose-boulders from stickin' too bad.

Lube up Professor Trout!

Yeah...I've heard that before.

Neosporin hasn't been doin' chit. Maybe I'll give the Vaseline a go.

I'm from Tenn. and I hate the dryness aswell. My nose does the same thing. If I knotice it getting dry at all I use a Q-tip and Vaseline my nose at night before I go to bed. If it gets bad I might hit do it a few times at night. I hate loation, but out here I have to do it my skin gets so flipping dry then the itching starts then it's bad news from there.

"The doctor said I wouldn't have so many nose bleeds if I kept my finger outta there."

Dryness is a fact of life for out here.
I sometimes boil a pot of water to humidify the air in the house. Keep the bathroom door open during a shower also. Winters are worse...your body will eventually aclimate...give it a few years.

This sore is still here. The outside of my nose has been red for a week now and the inside of the nostril is swollen badly. So I decided to go to the Doctor today. First time with the new Doc. She looks in my right ear and says, "Eeeewwwwww." Then she tells me I have the ugliest ear canal she's ever seen. Same with the left one. WTF! She asks if I wrestled. I say, "For 4 years but that doesn't routinely damage the canal itself." Some wrestlers get cauliflower ear but that's external.

Anyway...she finally gets to the nose and says that it is a bacterial infection (I already knew that) and that she can prescribe a cream but that's it. There's nothing that can be done to keep it from repeating. Unless I wanna get the area of my nose that keeps getting infected cut out. CUT OUT. It's my fawkin nose we're talking about here. With the marvels of modern medecine I can't keep some oozing, painful sore from recurring in my nose. I'm thinking a second opinion from an ear, nose and throat specialist might a good idear.

Second opinion? Just get a prescription for some antibiotics (if it's a bacterial infection) like Amoxicilin or Doxicillin. And in the future, be sure to clean your fingers befor pickin' your nose. Fingers carry a ton of the little bugs.

Ewuu...I wanna go back to talkin about Jeeps now...OK, Corvettes, airplanes, motorcycles too...

I found that instead of sticking my FINGER up my nose, I just wind up a piece of tissue and swirl it around in there. Gets out more than my finger can, and clean it up very nicely.

Never had any of these... things... growing in my nose with that method.

:puke:

I find that gargling with Jose' helps. :looney:

Get an ultrasonic humidifier and use it in your bedroom. It will do wonders.

I don't know about the bacterial bit, but I just use a saline solution nose spray. I just tip my head back and pour it instead of doing the whole "spritz" thing. (better aim)

In the Winter especially, I have to watch out for sinus infections. When that RH guage dips below 30 I have to look out. Excessive windshield time with the defroster/AC on seems to be a contributing factor for me also.

Ths may sound gross, but...
Blow your nose, don't suck.
Keep your finger out of your nose. Even though you know where it's been, you don't know what it has picked up that you can't see.
Pull, don't cut, long nose hairs as they may do an ingrown number.

Saline solutions work well for mosturizing you nose and rinsing out infected areas. You can either brew your own, when I do I use luke warm water, or buy solutions in a mist bottle.

Tom suggested a humidifier, good idea. We have one we run in the winter and getting the RH up to 40 works wonders for us. Stay away from ultasonics though, they throw the minerals into the air along with the H2O and they coat everything inside and out (really).
