My 93 4.0 has 250K miles on it and some piston slap... so I know what that sounds like. The problem I'm having is a "loud" lifter/pushrod/rocker arm type sound. I'm questioning whether this is the problem because it seems I can "shut it off" when it happens. Example: It will be tapping away and I'll give the throttle a little kick and it stops. It doesn't start and stop gradually, like lifters usually do. Sometimes at an idle It will start tapping away, loud and clear, then just stop tapping completely. Like I said instant on...instant off. I was wondering if it could be an injector making that noise. Any other ideas?
