I know there are lots of threads on similar issues but what im stuck on is that all three are out. I washed the 96xj 5sp and when I went to drive it I used the turn signal and only got a buzzing sound and occasionaly the signal would work. eventually it totaly went out and now I have nothing...no brake, turn or hazzard lights. I check the brake switch and its good. the relay for the flashers under the dash is good along with the fuse. also I could use some help with which grounds to check and where they are located. any idea if the water screwed something up?? any imput would be great.

Check the fusible links to see if you shorted something out and blew one. That was my problem when I lost all lights except turn signals.

Mine's a 1990 so I don't know if the 1996 tied the turns in with the rest of the lights.

I had the exact same thing on an 89 and it was all the bulbs. Go figure. Check the simple things first. I did a ton of tracing before I tried the bulbs.:rattle:

On the 89 there is a common ground for all these lights back on the drivers side behind the spare tire facia. They also all go through a common connector behind the drivers side kick panel. Don't know if it is similar on the HO but my guess is that it is.

I recieved an XJ that had the same problem, in the rear hatch, there are two wires, with the same style plugs (one male one female) that look SO like they should be connected. One wire is blue (your light system) and the other black, which in this case is ground. He had pulled the panel to look at the latch and saw these disonnected wires, so he "fixed" them. They are close enough to touch, and they blow the fuse instantly.

I had the same problem with my 89.It turned out that the fuse box terminals were hosed, corroded and not making contact with the fuse.Use a test light on the fuse(touch ground clip to the outside of the fuse while its installed in the fuse box and touch probe to the other pin that sticks out through the plastic case of the fuse to see if you have a complete circuit)

Ive had the same problem one of my fuses in the panle arent held well and it slips out, it looks like theyre all good and in there but i had to use a blade conetor and kinda extened the fuse out of the block so that it would hold with the wider spade connector. But it was those exact light too... Mines a 90

Thanks a lot guys for the help. I will look at the bulbs fisrt tommorrow and then move into the rest. Thanks again for the ideas and I will let ya know what happenes

alright well all bulbs are good along with the connections. I am still stuck! anyway would a bad turn signal module would cause this? I dont like electrical right now. again everyhting is out. turn, brake and flashers.

Get a voltmeter and backprobe the bulb socket. Hit the turn signal. You should see pulsing on the hot wire. If that is there, then you have a ground problem. A ground problem will show up as pulsing on both wires.

did you check the fuse box terminals yet?

I have the EXACT same problem and I'm going nuts trying to solve it now. I replaced the electronic flasher EP27 on my 1995. I am concerned about this small metal canister shaped object about 1 inch long directly under the steering wheel. It used to get real hot and i removed and now something in it jiggles. Seems like a fuse of sorts and the only writing is 4A but im pretty sure its not a fuse. Has three pins that plug into a socket. I can't find pics or any info through Haynes, Chiltons, or online. I was thinking it was a thermal flasher but like I said i have the electronic 5 pin...

I have no idea what this could be. No brakes, no hazards, no turns.

well I took a long weekend up to the mountains and now im back to try to figure this crap out. the terminals are good on the box so this is starting to lead me to a jacked up switch or something? turn signal switch? but that would mean that all these lights are tied together somehow. still screwed!

I would be willing to bet you have a bad relay. It could still test good ( thats why you get the BUZZ) but it is probubly out. Should be simple to check switch it out with the horn relay to see if it fixes it.

I swapped the relay out earlier with my 95 and that didnt do anything...thank you though for the idea.
