You should try to get it smogged first, otherwise you have to go back when it's smogged to finish the registration. You have 10 days to get it registered though, so if it doesn't pass before then you can at least get the paperwork started. Congrats on finally finding a rig!!

for future reference, if its a federal emissions vehicle (IE not originally sold in CA) it only needs to pass fed emissions standards, not CA standards. my last 3 XJs have all been fed emissions and have only had to pass with the fed standards.
