Hello jeep gurus,

Can any of you point me towards an image online that is of a jeep cherokee engine, with the parts labeled? If something like that exists it would be a huge help for my ignorant self to get started on learning how the machine in my driveway works.

thanks,

Frank

Which bits are you trying to figure out? I don't have an annotated picture handy, but a lot of the bits explain themselves...

Water Pump - this is driven by the belt, and the lower hose from the radiator is connected to it. It's bolted directly to the block

Power Steering Pump - Driver's side top, this has the two hoses that go to the steering gear (just about directly below it, bolted to the front frame rail.)

Alternator - lower passenger side, the only connections to this are electrical

Air Conditioning Compressor - upper passenger side, has the two hoses coming out the top and the "solid hub" pully (it's actually a magnetic clutch.)

There are a couple of idler pullys. The mechanical fan is bolted to the front of one of them (about midway up the engine,) while the other is usually there to route the belt around the thermostat housing (it may also be an adjuster on later years.) Idler pullys tend to be smooth, and just ride on screws holding them in place. They do occasionally require that you change the bearing, as it fails (no lubricant circulation, which can shorten bearing life. They're sealed units.)

The valve cover is at the very top of the engine, it has the oil filler plug in it.

The harmonic damper (the one that has to be watched - if the rubber ring starts to wear, the outer ring can "walk" into the aluminum timing cover and "machine" a nice groove through it...) is the large pully at the very bottom. It's bolted to the nose of the crankshaft, so it drives the belt - which drives all the accessories.

Thermostat - under the little housing where the upper hose from the radiator goes.

That's just about all the highlights, I think. Like I said, I don't have an annotate picture, but that should help you locate them on description, and all the accessories are common to pretty much every engine out there.
