New Yukon Zip Locker

Y'know a Ford is still American made even though many parts are from overseas because it is assembled here and many not all parts are USA made. Yukon could have just said that it was Made in USA and no one would have been the wiser. Honest company... I agree overall... Randy has a head for business that never ceases to amaze me. I still hesitate to spend that kind of money after seeing the video. I will wait awhile.
Personally I don't agree with that statement. If it says it's Made in the USA, then g'dam it, it had better be. To me there is no difference between something made in China with Chinese parts or assembled in the US with Chinese parts - neither are US made.:badpc:

I totally understand that sentiment (and want to agree:soapbox:), but in this era that means that there is no such thing as a "Made in USA" product that has more than one part. At least the one assembled in the USA that has USA and imported parts in it creates more American jobs and prosperity.

OK... thanks for the link to the new video. I really find it a bit hard to believe that much damage occurred. I believe the video with the Chinese locker... a blatant copy with inferior steel and machining, but the results with the Yukon in that video honestly make me suspicious. An American made locker, well machined and using high grade steel? Still I guess I will stick with a Detroit. I buy American whenever I can.
The difference in failure torque between the axle shaft and the Zip locker is only like 300 ft pounds. Not a huge difference in my view, however, the ARB withstood the shaft breaking and they did not find the failure point of the ARB. I think the zip locker would be adequate for the majority of people out there but for a couple hundred more I would go ARB for the peace of mind.

I don't find that at all 'ok'. Not to get into politics, but if I were the pres. I would tax the fawk out of imports. I don't care if the company is a US ran company; if you don't like the tax, bring your plant back home. Granted there are issues that would need to be addressed that would make it more inviting for them to come home - EPA, unions, etc.

I _REALLY_ hate the fact that if I want a watermelon, it has to come from Mexico. If my kid wants a toy, it comes from China. You want a hamburger, it comes from Canada. You want gas in your car, it comes from OPEC. It's just way fawking wrong... This is a self sustaining continent. We have farmers going hungry. We have American's loosing their jobs - no thanks to Obama and others, but still. But yet China is experiecing a huge growth - wonder why? ....Anyway!

Globalization is a bitch let me tell you, and i should know i'm in manufacturing.

As an aussie i say go ARB they are great. However great to see new lockers on the market, good luck to Yukon. I have your gears in my bus and they are great, hope the lockers go well for you too.

I don't like it, but the alternative of economic protectionism (high tariffs) and the resulting economic isolationism didn't work from 1929 through the late 1930s/early 1940s.

We tried it with FDR, and the definition of insanity is when you keep trying the same thing again and again and expect a different result.

Corporations have moved overseas where they are NOT TAXED. In 95 percent of the world corporations pay no taxes. Look to U.S. tax laws for the departure of businesses, along with our JACKPOT legal system. In most of the rest of the world if you sue someone and lose, then you have to pay ALL of the lawyers' fees and court costs.

By moving overseas corporations are invulnerable to law suits filed in the U.S.

That's what I mean, though, like you say it would take more than just taxing imports to make it work and all of that needs to be fixed - even if we don't raise taxes on imports. Business' need incentives to stay here. Right now we're giving them incentives to leave. That's completely wrong.

I agree!

Unfortunately we have too many SOCIALISTS in elected office and too many SOCIALISTS embedded in civil service (read as "you can't fire me no matter what kind of a worker I am, so bite me").

To paraphrase FDR, "The only thing we have to fear, is government itself!"

Anyway, we are getting way off topic here!

Exactly! Unions need to be taken out, too....

Looks like Yukons locker holds up just as poorly as their shafts and gears.

I love product consistancy! I wish Starbucks was as consistant as Randy's.
Hmm... My Yukon shafts held up better than my Warn premium hubs and my ARB locker. So now what? You saying ARB and Warn suck worse than Yukon?

I really don’t believe it though.

Reason being.
A stock 1996 Jeep XJ, With a 35"tire, 4.88 gears and auto trans.
aprox 200lb/ft of tq stock.
2.8:1 ratio 1st gear is stock trans
2.72:1 ratio transfer case (231) stock
Gear ratio of 4.88:1

That ='s
200 x 2.8 x 2.72 x 4.88 = aprox 7450total output lb/ft torque to carrier/locker.

That video shows that Yukon breaking apart at 6271 lb/ft? not very believable that a Zip would break apart like that with a stock TJ and trans and TC gearing with 4.88's.

I know others are installing them in v-8 apps with 4:1 TC's and lower 1st gears. some with lower gear ratios even.

Except your math sucks,it doesnt work quite like that!

well besides your 10-20% loss total, what am I missing? :lecture:

Nothing... It is exactly that kind of rare situation where all of the engine's power and multiplied torque are transferred to one axle that breaks a shaft/u-joint/hub/locker/R&P... whatever. Your math is fine, just normally the load is shared between axles and shafts. At least that has been my experience.

Their testing method doesn't take into account the flex of the entire driveline. All parts in the driveline twist or flex a little when torque is applied. Like I posted before I would spend $200 for peace of mind. That being said, I think the vast majority of users would never break a Zip Locker.

100% agree. But when you have people buying ected's and True-tracs with 30's on a stock rig, the ZIP is just as valuable of a choice to those customers...

On my rig with 40's and beating hard, I would pass...
