new to the Renault turbo diesel engine 1985

Bajacalal:
there was a 524TD on ebay the other day - 4500.00 was asking - Personally I did not think it was worth it as the description suggested that the person new nothing of BMW's or diesels- Dont see it today - and last i checked it no one placed a bid- high miles- and there is another in Ft Laud. Fla for 1700.00 need lots of work

Dunno if these are the same pump for sure- something I read suggested to me that they were the same- I have a book on this pump and if I can get back to the page that spoke of the pump - I 'll know for sure- Could it be that different? perhaps a little but i am sure not much off

i was thinking last night that 2.4 BMW engine would be good for the XJ - then got muddled about a transmission

Peace

nomadix: you can find the pumps under pierburg.

For the j8s 814 the pump was MPZA type on the newer models was replaced with FZPR type.
The change was made in order to separate the pump from the carter and avoid the oil suck in case of fault. To replace the pump with the new model are needed different components (shaft bering, etc) for that reason the cost go up to 650$.
Another thing to check is a shaft that connect the vacuum pump with the oil pump; the engine transmit the rotation to the vacum pump then this shaft to the oil pump; it's octagonal section shaft, it cost about 10$ and after 200000Km the corner of the octagon tend to grind, in case of fault the oil pump stop to rotate!

Marcoleo,

Would you post the link to the Renault website where parts can be ordered for the J8S 815? I am looking for parts sources too. Thanks for any help.

I started taking the engine out of my XJ and there is oil everywhere...I mean everywhere! There is oil in the intercooler, radiator, every cooling line and of course in the crankcase. Everything that i took apart I had to put a drip pan under it. Did this oil come from the vacuum pump as was discussed earlier in this thread? Or, I was thinking it may have come from the turbo, pushed by the seals. I don't know but there is a lot of it everywhere! If it came from the vacuum pump how would it have gotten into the cooling system? I would appreciate any comments out there. I have already appreciated the comments so far.

Nelson - How far apart have you gotten the motor so far? I think it could be a possibility that one of the seals around the cylinder sleeves is leaking. Did you have coolant in the oil?

Parts source - Winnebago Parts out of Iowa. I just ordered parts from them here a couple weeks ago and they are very helpful and friendly. I even talked to one of their technicians who is very knowledgeable on the engine. I think his name was John. I wrote it down and can verify it for you. You might try giving them a call. They have 800 number. I also located a guy in Canada that has some parts as well, but again I don't have it here with me now. Send me an email - I believe you are the same person who emailed me after I bought my Jeep on ebay a little over a month ago. I have rebuilt the lower half of the motor and will be firing it up tonight and finding out if I put it back together properly.

87 was the first year of the 4.0 and the stretched engine compartment so i would imagine so. i have no idea where you could find one of these motors, but after re-reading this thread thats over three years old:wierd:, my suggestion would be to looking into swapping in a 4bt out of a ups truck. Good Luck!

I found a renault powered jeep cherokee 85 all red for 500 bucks body+interior is in excellent cond, just not sure of motor. will go look at it soon! 101 thousand on it. Sound ok? what should i look for ? if it doesn't run should i just give up on it?

I assume you would have asked the seller if there was any problem with the motor. If not, you should! Especially if you have to travel any distance to see it then you should ask all of the questions you can think of first.

The ad on CL indicates that the head is missing. Find out why the head is missing, as there may be a bit more wrong with the motor than just a head missing. If it is just a missing head, you are probably ok for $500. These Jeeps are gutless and only get mid to high 20's for fuel economy. That one possibly less as it has an automatic.

Why is the head missing? If the head is missing, is it also missing the cam, rockers(8@$140 each), rocker shaft, the injectors, injection lines, cam sprocket, valve cover, manifolds, and turbo? Get ahold of the owner and see what is still there. Mopar still listed a few heads without rockers a while back, for $1300. I have three off these engines, so If you have any more specific questions or need pics, feel free to ask.

Old thread, but still i am missing a homepage with good tech info:
changing cambelt, injection pump timing, torque and sequence for head bolts etc

Anyone know where to find it ?

And by the way, the italian page Marcoleo suggest, doesnt seem to work anymore

Hi all, I'm new to the forum, and to jeeps. I just bought a 1985 cherokee pioneer with the j8s engine. Got a pretty good deal! The engine was all torn down, and I replaced the piston rings and sleeve seals, etc. Now I've got it nearly all buttoned up, but none of the manuals I have show where all of the rubber hoses go! I have a whole box full of hoses, and I can see that a bunch of them are duplicates, but it's pretty tough to try and match everything up blind! I would really appreciate any help; even just some decent pics of your engine (fully assembled, lol) would be tremendous help!
