New to the forum! Quick conversion question!

Hey guys. I was just wondering if the lift/tail gate from a 97 and up would fit on the 96 and below. I just love the the 97 and up look. Thanks guys for any help! :spin1:

They are different shapes and pretty sure they mount differently.

The roof was reinforced to take the extra weight of the steel tailgate as opposed to the fibreglass tailgate used on the pre-update, the taillights are also a different shape but I am unaware if the update taillights fit the pre-update models or not but the weight will be an issue....

The hinges are different. On one Jeep they mount inside and on the other they mount outside. I am not near my Jeep right now to tell you the difference but i'm sure of that. My Jeep is an '89. I believe it is the the newer XJs that have them on the inside. Either way, it would take a tremendous amount of effort to swap em. The tail lights should fit but, again, only after the lift gate swap.

Yeah I kinda thought it was gonna workout. Doesn't matter though cause I actually don't like the newer tail gate. I like the taillights. With a little fab I can make the tail lights work though. Agreed?

If you would read...you would see that I'm not even asking about the tail gate anymore. I understand the tail gate won't work. I even stated that i thought it wasn't gonna work. Once again if you would read, you would see that. I'm asking about the tail lights now.

I know this isn't what you asked about, so it's kinda off-topic; but if it was me I'd get a newer style XJ, and slap the front clip off of the older style on it. THAT'D tweak a few folks, eh?
