Just moved to Fort Bragg and was wondering who was all around the area. Was hoping to find some light wheeling spots and meet a few people. -Stew

Re: New to Nort Carolina

Welcome! Your two closest wheeling locations would be Uwharrie National Forest (URE) in Troy, NC, and Gulches in SC. You could head to the coast to Carolina Beach to get on the sand, or head into the mountains to Callalantee in Mtn City TN, just over the border from Boone NC to get in the snow and on the granite. There are national/state forest roads all over the western part of the state I can put you on if you are into that as well.

You can expect several trips to URE this year by people, as well as:
Possible Ghost snow trip, end of February
Possible gear swap party
Meet & Greet cookout in Charlotte
Carolina Beach camping trip
Members participating in ECORS
some NAXJA invasions of Lee County mud racing
...and various other stuff. We are going to try and plan things farther out this year, but keep a lookout for impromptu events!

Re: New to Nort Carolina

Welcome to the SEC. You've got some good guys around you.

Now...let's see some pics!!!

Re: New to Nort Carolina

Redheep is in the area. I know he is over that way as are a few others. I'm down near Darlington where the NASCAR and Drag Strip are located. I did a snow run to Callantee last February and am thinking about going again around the same time. Last year was a low turnout and a lot of snow and ice. Welcome to the SEC. Where are you coming from and whats the jeep look like?

Re: New to Nort Carolina

Welcome to NC. Iam about 5 min.s from the VA state line and 30 min.s inland from the OBX so if you ever head north to wheel let me know.

Re: New to Nort Carolina

Hey y'all. Saw this post and thought I would say hi. Moving to Pope Field in mid Nov. Already have a stock 4 door 01 XJ lined up to buy. Get to start all over. Didn't ship my original 89 here to Germany. Laws are pretty strict and it wouldn't have passed the German inspection. I was in Seirra Chapter before, just need to re-new my membership. :)

Re: New to Nort Carolina

Old thread! But welcome anyways. My second post still outlines most of your closest stuff, plus other activities we do around here. Give a shout when you are back and we will get together.

Re: New to Nort Carolina

Got bump the old stuff back up every now and then. Keeps people on their toes! I appreciate it. look forward to getting some good winter wheelin time in. :gee:

Well Callantee is closed but the rest of that places to wheel is accurate. There is a Off - Road festival in URE in Oct IIRC. You best place is URE and Carolina Beach. Gulches is further West and South of you. Welcome to the South!

Welcome back to the south would be more like it. Joinedmthe military out of Navarre,FL aka Lower Alabama. All my Dads family is from Paducah County, Kentucky. It will be nice to be back among my kinda people.

oh yeah didn't check that too carefully. Shame, because that is the best place for winter wheeling. Snow made that place a blast... speaking of digging up old pictures, here are a few from a snow run that I was way in over my head:

and little ole me at the time, somehow the only strap I took that day(got really hairy in a creek and just stayed strapped up the 100yds to the top of the trail). I used a lot of skinny pedal being stock with a small lift and 31" dunlop rover ats. I gained a lot of respect from that group when they realized I was driving it home and to class the next day.

I do miss that place. Of course I was a bit biased living 30 minutes away at the time.

Dang....That looks like it would be a blast. but i would have to do some serious work before i took a crack at it. a winch would be a start. :helpme: yall are getting me all excited. The last offroading i did was in a HMMV out at the drop zone doing parachute recovery. i think i spent most of my time in trees.

That was Callantee.... it's currently gone.

You're about 20-30 minutes away from me...longer if traffic sucks lol.

There's a handful of us in the Charlotte area that try to get together as often as possible. We'll usually meet up somewhere in town for a bite and a brew, or if the weather's good chances are there'll be a cookout.

Hasn't happened much lately thanks to crazy work schedules...

Basically same thing Tim said...

There is a group of us in Greensboro, (3 of us being on NAXJA, the majority else being from NC4x4) we get together for wings and a few cold ones every other monday, usually have a pretty good turn out if your ever interested. Also hit Uwharrie fairly often if your looking to do a little wheeling.

There is also:

The Flats in Marion NC, Ran by the Rockcorps 4x4 club
The Farm in Lincolnton NC, Ran by the Big Dixie Boggers
The Devils Playground in Trinity NC, ran by the Mud Devils 4x4 Club

Also several other places Im just failing to remember at this moment.
