I decided to try some retread tires:

245/75/16 Load range E $84.95 each x 5 plus shipping for a total of $510. I paid the little extra for the traction (kedge grip) stuff.

Kedge Grip: Our own unique blend of crushed (recycled) glass and crushed walnut shell particle blended into our full grade truck rubber. Kedge Grip acts in a twofold way; first the walnut shell is designed to come out leaving small (approximately 1 mm) size pits in the tread surface that will act as additional siping and create more traction edges to grip the road. The second is the crushed glass which is designed to stay in longer and create a gritty surface to help anchor you to the road. Does it really work? Don’t take our word for it, read some of the testimonials. Also, check out the 4Wheeler magazine (though under a different name that we are not allowed to use any longer due to trademark issues) in the August 2009 issue. They consistently had excellent results with our Kedge Grip.

So they arrived today:

This is a cropped fullsize picture from my new camera, a half-way decent lense coupled with the huge resolution allows for pretty good detail on the native image:

And for the heck of it a picture of the CRD:

You'll love those tires man! Treadwright is a great company and they make a hell of a product!

You wont like the "E" rating though!

I am curious about the Kedge Grip stuff I have heard about it but never seen how it work or how well it performs. Its sounds like a good idea. Nice tires and a good deal too.

Everyone who has had them only has good things to say, they say with the kedge grip they stick like glue.

Plus, at $7 more a tire, its not that much extra.

Look nice. Post up occasionally and let us know how the work out/hold up with a few miles on them.

You might want to get a set of light leather gardening gloves and throw them in the back under your spare. Once that kedgegrip starts wearing, I'm thinking those tires could be pretty nasty to handle. Ground glass isn't something you want pushed into the palms of your hands, and it'll be all over the tread as the rubber wears away.(I'm not talking about huge chunks of glass here, ever been in a glass shop and gotten the dust on your skin?)

Ya ill have to see what it looks like with some wear on it, if its anything like the walnut shells that I can see it shouldn't be problem. Though I do see where your coming from.

I'm thinking about gettin some treadwrights my self and the only bad thing I've heard that is if u get the ledge grip it wears a lot faster on the road but grips very well

you will like the extra grip the glass/shells get you. The walnut chunks fall out and leave very small holes...automatically siping the tire as you drive. The glass provides a gritty rough surface that helps grip whatever you are driving on. ive got the 33" mtr retreads with just the walnut shells (old version). they work great, and have gotten me everywhere i want to go.

That is some really impressive body work.

Good to know, I have my new 33" BFG AT retreads from them on the back porch right now, hopefully putting them on the XJ this weekend. I was too cheap for the glass/walnut shell though, hopefully it won't hold me back too badly.

EDIT: they're really lt285/75r16, but it's approximately the same size as a 33x11.5r16.

I ran those, in 31x10.50r15.

I really liked them, but I was running 3.55's, and with the black d windows, the setup was too heavy.

They were huge though, measured a true 31 inches.
