New member, First Jeep!

That looks fantastic. Good job cleaning up an old Waggy.

Oh and don't listen to SeanR.....the SEC boys know how to have fun in Harlan, KY.

Thanks Ed! I'm pretty sure my knees are hyper-extended and my back is thrown out, but it's clean!!! Now I need to do the bottom end and seal it back up.

I took the main bearing to a local machine shop today and the guy said to put the bearing back in and check the oil pressure. If the pressure is fine, run it til it dies. He quoted around 500 to freshen the engine and head if it comes down to it.

On a side note, I picked up some 703 injectors today! The total cost for all 8 was $30 :laugh3:

If anyone needs me to get some for them... PM me!

could be a good excuse to make a stroker... the 4.2 crank fits that block, and I think that nets you around 4.6 liters.

that said, I bet that engine will run awhile longer once you clean it all up.

Everything is buttoned back up on the Waggy! Oil pressure is 30 at normal operating temps. Strange since I could move the rods up and down on the crank by hand. I Put in a new oil pump, oil pan gasket, and valve cover gasket. I added 4 quarts of 5w30 super tech oil, one quart of ATF, and a Bosch filter. I have had the Jeep up to operating temperature a few times and took a couple drives up and down the block. I also put new spark plugs in and it cured my vibration issues when driving. (Must have been a misfire.) My plan going forward is to put in the new air filter and do short oil change intervals with ATF to finish cleaning out any crud I missed then replace the rod and main bearings after I do a brake job. I have found a few 4.2 motors around here, but am waiting for the right price before I buy one and keep the crank and rods for a stroker! :spin1:

Bought a 258 today!!! Now I have the rods and crank I need for a stroker build!! The rest is for sale and will be posted in the appropriate category when I can post there. For some reason it's not letting me. I should have it down to a bare block tonight. We shall see!

I would recycle the rest of the engine for beer money, it's not really worth anything unless you happen to find someone with an old CJ that wants it all original (not likely). the crank and rods are the goodies everything else goes in the scrap pile.

if you're going to do the crank and rods you should put a nice cam in there too, you'll get a lot more power out of it. funny how one thing leads to another and then everything spirals out of control till your wallet is empty isn't it?

Just
Empty
Every
Pocket

:D

damn what a hunk of rust.

Maybe save the bracketry for the accessories. Everything else bring to the scrap yard

Hey! Another Iowa native here that Lived in Navarre for 2.5 years while on active out of Hurby! Get yourself a pass, and get onto the Eglin Reservation. you will get lost its so big, and endless amounts of wheeling to be had. Also a few awesome fresh water pongs that you cant get to without 4x4 as well

Beer money is nice, but I want to recoup the hundred I paid for the block!! I've heard the stock cam does just fine with the stroker build compared to aftermarket. I want to keep this on the cheap and build a motor on the side to replace the current one. It runs fine, just want to run it like I do the motorcycle!! My 383 stroker left the pockets empty Grimm!!

Dukie, the donor jeep motor looked like it had been sitting outside for a while before I stripped it down! Also, they parked it due to a fire, hence the melted distributor :smoker:

Saving the brackets is always a must, so I will definitely do that!!

Funny story about the Eglin range... A guy I worked with thought it would be a good idea to take a shortcut on his way to a Jump mission. He was in a mini van and let's just say it didn't turn out too well!! I'm gonna stay away from wheeling until I feel my waggy can handle it!!

I know it's been a while since I posted so I'll give y'all an update. I redid all the grounds on the Jeep using Cruisers guide, replaced the rear brakes with all new parts, and revamped the cooling system. The cooling system turned into a longer ordeal then it should have due to a broken bolt in the block.

Not cool and to make it worse, I broke an easy out in it! I went to Lowes and picked up two small grinding stones and carbide cutters and cleaned the hole out then re-tapped it a size bigger.

I also found a write up on using a newer thermostat housing with a petcock valve to deal with burping the system, so I installed it. I had to re-drill the bottom hole a tad bigger.

After the install I did all distilled water, Prestone coolant flush, and water wetter. I'm doing the extended flush so thats the current mixture that the jeep is running in the cooling system. The first night I ran the Jeep to operating temperature and it was at normal operating temperature.

After it sat for the night, I can't get it above this temp reading.

This was the reading I was getting when I initially started the Jeep and found out there was no thermostat in it. I did test the 195 degree thermostat in boiling water and it opened fine, I'm just hoping it's not stuck open now. Any thoughts? FYI: I did replace the sending unit, temp sensor, and temp switch in the radiator.
