New carb rule: Tire inflation

I found this insanity over lunch and posted it in the non-tech/off topic forum. I probably should have posted it here.

The reason I posted this was, it's a proposed new rule by the California Air Resource Board. As I understand the article, there is a 15 day comment period(not sure when it started when I posted) before any further action on the rule is taken.

I've had a little time after work to dig around. Here's what I've found:
I'm pretty much too late with this. The comment deadline is tomorrow(1/29/10)
Here's the news release from CARB:
http://www.arb.ca.gov/newsrel/2010/nr011410.htm

Here's the rulemaking activity page:

Current proposed rule available for download(PDF file)

Conveniently, the current proposed rule doesn't list penalties. They put this in:

(1)Penalties. Penalties may be assessed for any violation of this
article pursuant to Health and Safety Code section 38580. Each
day during any portion of which a violation occurs is a separate
offense.

(2) Injunctions. Any violation of this article may be enjoined pursuant
to Health and Safety Code section 41513.

I'm not sure how to comment on proposed rule making in California, but anybody out there who's interested might want to find out.

If you guys don't like what CARB is doing than you need to start writing some letters. Not to CARB, but to the politicians in Sacramento and Washington DC. They are the ones that have written and passed the legislation requiring clean air. The Air Resources Board is just implementing that legislation.

"The regulation, which provides better fuel economy, reduced carbon emissions and increased safety, provides state vehicle owners having their vehicles serviced the option to either agree to have their tires inflated at the facility or to do it later on their own"

WTF?

Ok, so you are all going to think I am an oddball. I sat next to one of the lobbyist pushing for this about 9-10 months ago on a flight to Sacramento.

I heard him and his colleague yap and yap about this regulation.

I am going to be the oddball that says it makes sense to a certain extent. Making sure that tire pressures are maintained appropriately can help tires last longer, less blowouts, better gas mileage (I really hope nobody here argues with that), and hence, these guys did studies, for years on the improvement in mileages because of this, which translated to a reduction in emissions, blah blah blah. I found it interesting....

Yup, but to require you under penalty of fine to provide written documentation certifying your tire pressure..

Think about just trying to get a tire store to mount your tires and properly inflate them? The last time I had a tire store mount a tire, it was a 35", and they inflated it to 40 psi. By chalk test, I ran at 26 psi.

Yeah I am with you on that Cal. The process is not gonna work but I think the concept is in the right direction.

I could see giving people fixit tickets if the tire pressure is grossly low but even that is too big brotherish for me. That's like fineing people for not changing their oil often enough because it will wear out their engine and cause more pollution. Where does it stop? This whole thing is another example of how politicians want to think for us and force their will and ideas upon us. We need to purge our government of these assholes before our freedoms have all been stripped. Frogs in a cookpot we are aren't we?
