i just picked up my cousins (off to college) 1997 mercury sable and my aunt said that if i am to fix it up i can have it, it ran fine for about a week and suddenly the alternator dies, if i jump it it runs fine off of the other car, but disconnecting the battery it dies. what i'm asking is what else do i have to replacwe with the alternator? this has happened once before and they replaced it with a rebuilt alt. but what if its something else that's causing it to die? things to test etc.. btw.. it has 255K miles on it (was planning on fixing it to get it running then just sell it) and its the LS edition. and has the 3.0 L DOHC Duratec 30 V6 any help would be greatly appreciated, as i have to take the jeep off the road for body work and putting on the lift.
