need lunch box locker opinions....

Im running Aussies front and rear. Never had any issues, there stout lockers, you will get some noise from them but if your driving an auto you really dont get the kick to the left at all.

I drive an automatic and I definitely get the kick to the left occasionally. It is unmistakeable but its not scary.

You won't get anything from the front unless 4wd is engaged

Not true with mine. If I turn hard left at slow speed the left wheel gives some feedback. Not sure if its due to me having a ZJ with the NV242 t-case or not, but I get feedback/shake/ratchet.

never had an issue, always worked when i engaged 4wheel, i was very happy with it. it wont affect driving in 2wd, you can stomp on it all you like. its not seeing a load, so it wont lock up (if its installed correctly)

That is exactly backwards from how it actually works. Auto lockers are ALWAYS locked until they sense a differential in wheel speed. If one wheel needs to turn faster than the other they "unlock" and the two halves ratchet past each other. That is the ratchet noise you hear when turning. When the wheels speed equalize they return to the "Locked" position by closing back together.

Tally XJ: how can you say you get feed back? if you leave your 242 case in full time 4hi then you are engaged the whole time.

to the OP, just find someone local who has a lunch box locker and ride with them its the best way to witness what we are all talking about

I never run 4hi, or any mode of 4WD, on the pavement and you wont ever be able too when locked front and rear. Auto lockers and pavement don't mix.

I am always in 2WD when on pavement and I can assure you, when I turn sharp left at slow speeds, the left wheel jumps, bucks and shakes the Jeep and the locker has to be the reason. It didn't do this before the locker.

is your locker front or rear?

I installed a Spartan locker in my D30 recently and it is great I only hear it when I make a really sharp right turn at low speeds and it usually is just a slight pop. There is no " feed back " at all when driving on the street. Installation was a cake walk too.

let me rephrase for you. They wont STAY locked up without a load on them. You have to install it correctly, with the right amount of space, so it can move in and out (thrust washers). I dont consider that locked, since as soon as u turn the wheel, it moves apart. It just rides in that position because of the springs in there. Its not sensing anything, its just due to the forces its seeing. Since NO torque is going through the carrier in 2wd, the aussie is able to move apart enough, and rachet, allowing free movement of either wheel. It should easily do this, there shouldnt be jerking or really any feedback. ONLY time i ever felt it was fully turned to lock, going less than 5mph in a parking garage. It clunked once, then i heard it rachet.
