My belt popped off on the way to work. Guess I tightened it too much when I went to retighten it after installing 3 weeks ago.

Anyone know off hand what size socket is used to adj the tension pulley for the serpintine belt? I think its 5/8. I was hopping to just steal a socket from work so I could fix it on my way home. Not sure if it makes a difference but its a 97 4.0 Auto

Last time that happened to me was because the bearings on the water pump were toast allowing just enough play for it to slip off. Before you go and chew up a 2nd belt in your fan I'd check for play in the tensioner and the water pump.

thanks, ill check it out.

I never had a problem until I replaced the cracked belt that came with it, figures :)

It started to squeal a bit about 2 weeks after and figured it just needed to be tightened (after the belt stretched a bit). From what I could tell, the new belt is still good.

Definitely give a good looking at all the rotating pulleys/tensioners before putting a belt back on it..... there's gotta be a reason, too tight isn't going to cause a belt to come off without breaking.

well, turns out my power steering pulley didnt like being pulled on any longer. Guess I didnt see that at 4am this morning. PS fluid was everywhere and I can see the bearings. Guess I need a new PSP. I had it towed back to my place. How much do they run?
