Need help with welding cracks in frame

Is anyone available to weld a few small cracks in my frame near the steering box this weekend? Or do you know of someone who is competent enough to weld to the unibody?

Here are a few pics:

Little crack just left of the bump at the top in the frame.

I'm gonna pull the box to see if there are any other cracks before ther Crok plate goes on.

I'm happy to provide some beer

Aren't you having Andy weld it up at URF? I know Andy, friend, Sean (SeanMan) welded up my rock sliders I bought from him. He gratiously spent 5 hours with me at his house welding up my sliders. I took so long because my pinch seams were badly damaged and wouldn't hook up easily with the ORGS style slider that has 5 pinch seams mounts & 2 frame mounts. Wish you the best. Yeah get that thing welded up and get a C-rok plate and maybe also a MORE steering brace and you should be o.k. in the future.

I think that Andy has placed a moratorium on working on other people's junk until his junk is done. He has been VERY generous with his time with a lot of people and this kept him from completing his rig. I am certain that he could use a hand himself, but wouldn't ever ask for it :0

Where do you live? It looks like your steering box is off right now making the XJ un driveable? I would recommend doing the CROK plates and welding all at once. I can help, but time is really tight right now as my brother is coming out 7/31 from OH to do some wheeling and my junk isn't done yet.

Where are you taking him wheeling? How long is he out here for? I'm going to Chicago to visit my family 8/20-29, but would love to get a group together for the 31st to do Fordyce or Barrett before we officially do those runs in August. I'm set up pretty good right now and want more Rubicon like trails to drive on. I did the Hell Hole trail with the Boonie Bouncers club here in Sac and it was fun, but it wasn't challenging enough for me with my dual lockers etc. Are you guys going solo or would you mind getting a small group to go with you guys on the 31st? The Rubicon, as you know, is closed the last week of July/1st week of August for the Jeepers Jamboree, and the whole Spider Lake thing needs awhile to work itself out, so Fordyce would be a good bet. The Sierra Trek runs from 8/5-8 so it shouldn't be a problem on that day/weekend.

Sean - The PS box is still on it and it is driveable. I have a CRok plate sittin in the garage. I just haven't installed it because I need to figure out how to make it fit with the BPI bumper mounts. My wife is gone all weekend so if we could do it this weekend, I'ld be happy to help with your rig if needed. I just need to pick my wife up at the airport Sunday morning.

Hey Basalt,

Here's what I did. I cut off the overlapping portion from the c-rok plate and had a friend weld it for me. Before cutting the c-rok plate, I made a mock-up template of it out of plywood with holes drilled for mounting. After the plate was cut, I used that plywood template together with the c-rok plate and BPI bumper to make sure all the mounting holes would be in the exact places while it was being welded. Really easy.

I know this is a very old thread, but I was wondering if the full inner and outer C-Rok kit will fix/hold the entire steering frame area where there are some cracks already? Is it better to 1st patch up these cracks and then install the inner and outer C-Roc plates or will the 2 plates fix the problem without needing to weld the small cracks that have already started? I know it probably depends on how bad the cracks are.

it WILL be better to weld them up first. how much better depends on how big the cracks are. I think the SBS brace from JKS is much better because it welds on the inside and outside with sleeves tying it together and eliminating the crappy stock spacer.

The C-Rok inner plate gets rid of the crappy stock spacer too, but is bolt on. I think I might go with it (outer and inner plate) and then weld the other edging of the plate(s) to the frame. I haven't seen the xj yet, but it ran huge tires (39.5 tsls), so I don't think it will look good. Thanks for your advice Brett.
