Need advice on CMP

Posting this in this forum because it is a 4.6 Golen stroker.
2001 XJ sport

Ok,

I have been getting a CEL with code 1351 (cam, crank disagree) off and on for a couple of months.

I have replaced the CMP and the CPS, several times on the CMP.

I think I have found the issue. The teeth on the "distributor" drive gear are VERY worn. The stator and sensor had noticable slop in them. I think that this allowed enough movement to cause the issue.

What I need to know is this, Can I swap in a drive gear from a distributor model? Jeep only sells the whole assembly for $300.00. Doable if needed, but crown automotive has the distributor gear for $31 shipped.

anyone ever tried this?

Also, what would make the gear wear so quickly? the jeep only has 90k miles on it.

Thanks

take a look down the hole and see if the drive gear on the cam is worn down too. sounds like it was loose or worn when it was put in and the play eventually wore the gear down.

as long as there is no play in the shaft and the gear on the cam is in good shape, you should be fine just replacing the gear on the assembly.

You can get the driver/sensor for around $60 at any other place (autozone, Napa, advance auto, etc). The last time I priced this at the dealer it was $100, but that was several years ago.

Also, when/if you do get a new one, the is a hole in the drive assembly. Be sure to force oil into that hope prior to prelube installation.

As for the accelerated wear, do you have a high volume pump?

The Golen I installed in my 97 back in 00 ran two hundred miles and grenaded due to the cam wandering around destroying the oil pump/distributor drive gear. It appears that the preload spring had been left out of the timing cover.

Just sayin...

No one here has the drive unit available. I used to work in a couple of different auto parts stores here, so I called a few folks who know what they are doing. No dice.

Can you get me a par number?

The cam looked fine
yes its a high volume pump, but would that really make that much of a difference?

In response to the other post about the preload spring, The timing cover has been off of this one. It ran for 8000 miles in a different jeep (distributor model, no abnormal wear on that unit) and has been in my late model for +- 1200 miles.

My jeep has 90,000 on everything except the new motor. I will admit, I didn't check the wear on the cam sensor/oil pump drive when we did the swap. It just didn't occur to me.

local Advance should be able to get:

Cardone Select (new) 84-s4601
Richporter FD39

both retail for around $70.00 up here, should be about the same down there.

I just picked one up at Napa 4 weeks ago.

There is a chance that the HV oil pump is putting too much pressure on the cam and drive gear.

So is the spring and pin present?

Thanks for the heads up on the parts info. I'll check Advance and Napa. I use to work at advance, You'd think I'd know these things :)

As to the other question, yes the preload spring is there. The jeep ran about 7000 miles in a previous jeep (same cam, same oil pump) with no issues. We pulled the distributor that was in it before, it has a little wear, but nothing odd.

You could try Rockauto as well.

To continue the possible issue with the HV pump there have been a few people with the gears failing from it. I am running one, but I don't have that many mile son mine. I also have direct oiling to the drive gear.

I have the same pump in a stroker I built for my daughter's jeep. It has +- 20,000 miles on it with no issues so far. Not saying it can't happen, just seems odd that it would be so hit and miss.
