An easy way to see if a screenname is available is to do an advanced search under that username, it'll show in the dropdown if it's been registered.

Makes it easy on the Admin that way.

In this case Mongo is taken, but has no posts.

Nope, sorry. It does not work that way. If the user has not been active for a while, the screen name will not show up in a search. Sometimes people register just to read, make no posts... and the name will drop off of the username list.

That's why I couldn't find my dad's username in the list, I thought I was just too dumb to figure out how to work it!
