seriously broken shock stud with no nut oil sender unit snapped and taped on. Now I find a motor mount with a missing (could just be sheared I don't see the head of it) bolt. What kind of person does this to their XJ. It's a travesty. I'm happy I get to rescue/save it. I certainly have my work cut out for me though.:banghead:

ANYWAYS, If I want to replace them with these brown dog offroad one's I keep seeing in the adverts here what kind of difference am I looking at? Is it really worth it for 80% DD and 20% mild offroad?

(4wd 4.0 sport chry 8.25 3 inches in back and prolly 2"~ in front when I can buy the parts but right now stock.)

I bought a Volvo xc90 from a friend who has a mechanic who lied to her about all the repairs he did.. I started uncovering so many bs repairs, parts he charged her for oem and they were amazon special like wheel bearings (300 dollar difference each), and shit like that. I feel your pain man.

If you enjoy changing out the engine mounts, the Brown Dog mounts are not for you.

I was replacing gaskets on the engine in an 85 Grand Wagoneer and I found a wood screw in one of the valve cover holes, along with an engine wiring harness butchered so bad I just punted and bought a replacement one.

I have not replaced the engine mounts since installing the Brown Dog mounts. I don't remember how long ago I put them in, but I think I would have changed the driver side mount three or four times already.

I once saw a wood screw used to plug a broken brake line... as opposed to, I dunno FIX THEIR FLIPPIN BRAKES!

I overpaid for the XJ I have now, mostly because the guy presented me with a folder full of receipts for work that he had paid professionals to do. Things you would have to do on a stocker anyway, like motor mounts, new header, etc. I figured it was worth it to me not to have to do all that work myself since it had all already been done.

I've had it two years and I've re-done every last item that he paid for. All of it was wrong.

All of it.

We're talking zinc-plated bolts in the crossmember and the skid plate, fuel pump installed without the O-ring, and some seriously scary electrical repairs that I'm surprised didn't cause the Jeep to burst into flames.

Next time, just going to buy a stocker.

I've seen where somebody did that with a bolt from the axel housing.

My first XJ I got it from a body shop, but I don't think they did it but the front grill signal bezels was a spin the wheel for what type of screw or bolt would be there.
I heard the previous owner Taichung at a vo tech school.

For 20% mild off roading, IMO, no they are not needed and will significantly increase theinteriror noise level.
I been down this road and have a set of Brown Dogs sitting out in the garage, after being removed.
I used them for a year and liked the responsiveness but hated how I could hear every mechanical noise and, yes, they were adjusted to produce the minimal amount of noise and vibration.
The wife hated them from day one.

For mostly off-road, hard core use, get them, For mild use, stock mounts, in good shape, will serve you well.

It seems that any screw that was removed on my Jeep was replaced with a drywall screw.

It really is not that hard to save a couple of old tuna or cat food cans and use those to keep your hardware organized.

When I am at the JY I make it a point to look for original screws.

I worked at a hobby shop up until a month ago, if I had a dollar for every wrong screw, nut, boogered solder joint, broken and/or missing parts, ect, I could likely buy some of the replacements for the rusty body parts on my XJ! I also have a friend who works for a Chevy dealer that bought a Hatch Fox Body that had a supercharged 5.0 that they got as a trade in, and as he and another friend started to dig into it, it began to look like the guy who built it shouldn't be allowed to get near a set of handtools again!

Have to ask - were your Brown Dog mounts using rubber or poly bushings? I'm guessing poly, though.

When I first installed a set of M.O.R.E. with rubber (before the Brown Dog ones existed, IIRC), I did notice extra noise/vibe at idle, but once I got moving they were nearly as smooth as OEM. I'm close to 10 years in on them now, and for most of that they've been as smooth as OEM.
