My Hypothermia Run

Well a group friends and I decided to do our own Hypothermia run. We left Saturday morning around 10 from the local store. One XJ, two TJ's, and one LJ all locked with the smallest being on 33's. We headed up the FS53 breaking trail all day and ended up at the intersection of the 53 and the 42. It took us about 5 hrs and it was a 19 mile trip. At the top were we camped there was over 5ft of snow under the jeeps.

We had our fire and dinner then went to bed. Woke up the next morning to 4 new inches of snow. Headed down the 42 to sunset falls. There were over 15 trees we had to cut back so we could get through. Finally made it down around 3 today.

This route has not been passable or hasn't be done for over 2 months. We made it finally and now its open. It was a great weekend in the snow with friends. I can't wait to do it again. Sorry about the phone pics its all I had forgot the camera.

my group ( 2 xj's, a yj and 3 yotas) turned back once we came across the logs on the 42 coming from the sunset side on the 20th of this month. no body brought a saw or we would have cleared them. looks like a nice weekend in the snow. believe going to the 41 from the 42 is also blocked by drowned trees.

Great story too. Looked like one heck of a weekend.
There's one pic it looked like the cherokee was just plowing snow, up to the bumper!
Was it alot of forward and reverse just to get thru?
Or was the snow light enough to just push straight thru?

Was it alot of forward and reverse just to get thru?
Or was the snow light enough to just push straight thru?

The snow was perfect. There were spots of back and forth but that wasn't one of them. I was pushing snow for most of the trip. We made very good progress. We could of easily done it in one day but had packed to stay the night. It was epic cant wait until the next time.

Someone else's view

Ill start off by saying that one cant have more fun in the snow when your with good friends.

We started off the morning right about 10am and headed up the 53 into the Gifford pinchot.

The cow bell exchanges were all a great time with it bouncing a bunch between us all until DarEl ended the day sinking to his waist. Day two had a few less pulls but I think DarYl ended up taking the win for the weekend. Tommy was determined in a few places to make sure it wasnt him that ended up with it.

This is what happens when you get a 3 season tent into the fourth season and add 4" of fresh wet snow. It was warm though.

It is fun. Our area is perfect for this stuff. I live 30min from driving at over 4000ft, 1 hour from the beach, 1.5 hours from the high desert, and 1 hour from some of the best snow skiing in the USA. It's perfect except the rain .

Ryan, Thanks for leading that run. I had never done any cold weather camping before last weekend. It was great times even with my tent collapsing. I will definitely be doing more runs like this!

it sure is and the rain isn't that bad, just grab a hoodie and liquor up. lol
