dude seriosly do those seals yourself man.
18$ each for the inners.
instructions:
pull brakes, units bearings with shafts attached,
pop off tie rod
pop cover,
pull bearing cap bolts, make sure to mark each side,
and also top and bottom to put them in the exact same spot.
pull carrier.

hit out old seals however you feel
install new inner seals
put it all back together.

maybe a few hours if you've never done it, it goes fast.
 
you could do it yourself in like half a day or a long evening taking your time. you knew it was an inner seal. 40$ and a half day of labor is better than 400$ and waiting a week. do it yourself next time, its super easy.
 
Seriously. They will probably use cheap seals and you will end up doing it your self again in a few months. I'd pickit up and drive it home. And do it yourself. There are quite a few vids on YouTube that show you how to do it. You'd still be better off than 400$.
 
100$+40$ = 140$ <<<400$. (plus gear oil and RTv for the diff, but pretty much save about 260$ ) gordon is right, they'll use some cheap crap seals probably and do a half assed job i wouldn't trust their labor there at 4wp. if you're gonna wheel get used to changing inner axle seals.

yep you need to remove the carrier.
 
Seriously, listen to Jon. Go pick up your Jeep, pay them the $100 for the inspection and drive it home. Changing the seals is pretty easy...considering all the other work you've done you'll knock it out fast. Here's a good write up by one of the SoCal guys. It's well written and has great pictures to boot.

I'm not going all the way out to el camino ave just to give them $100 to tell me that yep I blew a seal. I'm just going to have them do it this time

but I learned something. If I had known I could drive it home and how simple this fix was I would've done it myself
but I didn't know. so this time I lose. honestly I'm just sick of this jeep. and I have about 30 hours worth of body work to do I'm just going to pay to have my junk worked on and not complain about it anymore

and don't you have to reset the backlash?
 
No, you don't have to reset anything. Just make sure you keep track of all the shims when you pull the carrier and put them back in exactly the way they came out.
 
Dont give up just yet on your jeep. Once you get all the small things worked out, you're gonna love it!
 
yah sorry gordon. i had no idea. i was wheeling and driving on that axle for months, and i bought it from a naxja guy as it was . haha. i cant believe it didnt explode.

and jake you are looking at it in the right light, that learning experience and many more will be with you for the rest of your life, and inner axle seals for the rest of your life will now not be a big deal.

after you get the initial set of bugs worked out, youll be very pleased. dont get discouraged, just think of each thing you fix now as one more thing less likely to break on the trail.

But seriously, it's a Jeep. It's gonna cost some money and take some time to fix, but once it's where you are having fun on the trail with others, that's all that matters.
 
It's all good John. You took care of me man.

But really you own a jeep and jeeps are nevery really done. We all want to be done with them at some point but we always want bigger and better. It's an addiction.
 
alright so $437 later they tell me that the shims were installed on the wrong side (they belong on the inside of the bearing?) and the diff was only wearing on one side and it caused the other side to blow a seal
so either my bud who setup my gears did it wrong or 4wp took me for a ride. whats up
 
They are taking you for a ride IMO. If the shims were outside the bearings they wouldn't be on anything. Nor would it adjust the backlash. Does this make sense to anyone else?
 
Doesn't make much sense to me either. IDK what to say, but get it out of 4wp and have your buddy fix it or take it elsewhere.

Has the guy that set up your gears done other gears before? I dont see how a mistake like that is possible, especially if you have a gearset or two under your belt.
