I need a new catalytic converter for my 1990 wagoneer 4.0
I don't have the money to buy te OVERPRICED CA converter (200 bucks).
Anyone know of a source for the regular one?
My smog tech doesn't care for the CA one.....
I'm in LA.

amazon may ship it to you. I ordered a Cal Cat and they had shipped a 49 state model. They do have pretty good pricing. You would probably have to install it yourself too.

Unfortunately, you don't have an "Option" on which one you buy. You have to inspect your Jeep first to know if you can, and here's how: Open the hood and take a look at the vehicle ID plate that is attached to the firewall, right by the brake master cylinder. If your vehicle ID plate reads something like, "This vehicle conforms to CALIFORNIA EPA standards" or something like that, CALIFORNIA being the important word, then you HAVE to buy the CA compliant converter. There is also a number or something that has to match the number on the CAT too, but I can't remember what it's called.

On the other hand, if the vehicle ID plate reads, "This vehicle complies with US EPA standards" then you can buy the cheaper one. How do I know this? I did my research about six months ago when I had to buy a new one.

In SD, I went to Express Muffler and got most of the info...they are always pretty cool. Give them a call for more on the number match, also check DMV website, I remember they had some stuff in the FAQ section. (619) 449-6800. Gotta love California!

Good info right here!

thanks!

Quite a few places will not ship a 49 state cat to California. Just an FYI. My Jeep is 49 state, and I now have my mom's address on my summit racing and amazon accounts. I kill the cat on the rocks before it wears out.

I found that buying on eBay and some sellers on Amazon is the way to go gone that they will sell it 'for off-road use only'.
The issue I'm facing now is having to look for someone I weld it without paying an arm and a leg!
I'd clamp it BUT not willing to take a risk with thieves. It's happened twice already.

I couldn't get the correct CA cat for my '99, but the Jeep had come from NV so I had a 49 state cat shipped there. They tech didn't check for the test group number and it passed the sniffer test so it passed.
