Nah, I've got a couple in my back pocket already and I tend to keep business (even volunteer crap) and friends seperate... Hell, frankly I didn't know I would be "re-involved" in advocacy until last night. I thought I was retarded... er... retired.

All of this bicycle talk has gotten my all worked up. I'm going for a ride. Perhaps I can run over some dog walkers at Peter's Canyon.

As far as the original question goes, that is a hard call.

Fat ass would say a full suspension to make it smooth. You can either get a really nice hardtail or a fair full suspension bike. It depends on what you are riding as well. Fire roads don't need full suspension but hairy descents would. Your call.

Remi got a crazy deal on a full suspension bike I set him up with. His price range was a little hight than your though but I don't recall the details. He will post up with which Specialized he got.

I have, and enjoy, both hard tails and full suspension bikes.

I think I ride my Blur a little more than my hard tail but that is because the hardtail is set up as a single speed right now.

Yeah, my price range was lower then yours was and at the end I ended up paying a little bit more then what you're considering (although not by much) and I got a specialized FSRxc Comp. Man that bike rocks! It's a lot more bike then I originally planned for, but it feels like it will last me for a while. Now if I could only get in shape and have more time to ride it!

Nice review! I agree, it sucks ass, but the entrance to the park is about a quarter mile up the street. Easy to pass through it and hit Oaks, my home park.

I have had a couple of both and personally I prefer the FS with a FOX RL. I just bought a Cannondale Jeckyll 700 sx after getting my hardtail Jamis ripped off and I have to say this is the sweetest bike I have ridden yet. The lockout feature is great. Just my 2cents.

Actually, Grant, Avery, and Curt know a lot more about bikes than I do.

When I started biking, my first three bikes were hardtails. I was a latecomer to full suspension. I finally got a 4" travel Intense Tracer, which was a great "lightweight" full suspension cross-country bike.

Then a couple of years ago, I moved up to a Intense Uzzi SLX, with 7" in the back and 5" in the front (I need a longer travel fork). It's a little heavy at 34 pounds, but I don't have any trouble climbing with it.

I've often thought of getting a hardtail as a second bike. But then I think, would I ever ride it? Full suspension is much better.

So what's my point? :dunno: A hardtail would be good to start off with. But if you keep riding, you WILL want to upgrade to full suspension. But I've known people to start off spending good money on a full suspension bike and then NEVER ride it. Then they get pissed off when they try to sell it and can't get near what they paid for it.

So you'd be better off with a hardtail, or maybe upgrading your bike (which would be difficult with a 1" steer tube) until you are sure that you want to continue riding.

Remi took the plunge and got a good FS bike. But he has ridden several times and is still enthusiastic (despite what we've put him through). So it was a good move for him.

I actually used to ride quite a bit. When I lived in La Habra Heights, I regulary rode Skyline, Turnbull, Schabarum trails. I rode the Julian MTB fesival a couple of times. Since I bought the house and got married I haven't done much of squat.

My current bike is a steel-frame Schwinn High Sierra (vintage '84 or '85). The only things left from the original compentry are the Sugino cranks and Suntour thumb shifters. Things are pretty much old and worn out. I would like a new bike I just don't know which way to go - hardtail or FS. Part of that reason is cause I rode some of the first generation Trek FS bikes (cantilever arm with an elastomer stack) down in Julian and they were a blast! but like Avery said I can get a really nice hardtail or a middle of the road FS for the price I want to pay.
