MSD Off road 6 with a no start situation

A few years ago I bought a MSD6 Offroad ignition and installed it per instructions into my 90 4.0l. About a year +/- after installing it I began to have stalling problems. Replaced all the usual suspects, cap, rotor, plugs, coil, ignition module, fuel filter, CPS, even put in a high dollar MSD deutsch WP connector in place of the big flat wide one. Finally I removed the MSD and it hasnt done it since. Has anyone else run into the same sort of problem? I guess I could have a bad MSD but I have never gotten around to sending it in.

You've hit the nail on the head; your MSD ignition is bad so if it's still under warranty, return it and claim a refund. Don't bother replacing it.

I agree i've killed 3 in less than 2 years. by far the most worthless money ever spent on my XJ. Don't get me wrong i love the performance but come on. They die so often on me that i built a bypass plug so i just have to unplug the MSD box and plug in the jumper and it runs fine.

I posted here somewhere all the trouble ive had and what MSD told me about the quality of the 6 offroad box. It was interesting i'll see if i can find the original post.

Dunno about the 6 offroad, but the 6A has been very reliable.

I have the MSD 6 offroad box. Actually my 3rd one now, I keep killing them, when I talked to the guys at MSD they told me the offroad box was there cheapest guts put in a fancy box. What they told me to do was buy any anylog box and send it to them and they can add "humiseal", the epoxy looking stuff that seals the box.
I love the performance increase, but it would last about 3 months then die.
We (MSD Tech and i) finally decided that a combination of heat and voltage spikes was the culprit (besides bus service and offroading my cherokee is also a roadside rescue truck) and the voltage spikes where coming from the constant jump starts to other vehicles.

If i was do do it again i would use a digital box and mount it inside. away from most of the heat and water.
Call MSD and see what they recomend.

my point is the "cheapest guts in a fancy box" i think ANY thing other than a 5 series, offroad or marine (same concept) box should be okay. just send it to MSD to add humiseal and it should work if it's mounted away from excessive heat.

Thanks for the info Dingo. The box was mounted on the upper firewall just above the brake booster and never seemed to get too hot there but who knows. I really liked the performance increases too so ill have to definatly have to look into a better box.
