hey all,
Picking up 4 31x10.50's in Milwaukee and driving em home to St. paul. Can I tie them on top and be safe? Other wise I am looking at another $71 to rent a darn trailer
Thoughts?
Thanks

I have had tires loose in the basket on top of my cheroe before with no problems. If you rope em down you should be fine. How many are you putting on the roof?? Are you concearned about wieght?? Are they on rims or just loose tires?

tires

Just 4 loose tires no rims that I am aware of. Just curious if there was room up there. Have thule load bars and such to tie to and might could come up with rack if needed
thanks

If you've gotta do it this way, use ratchet straps so you can get that extra snugness. Make sure you check them quite often too. Way back when I had a top, I lost a couple items because the rope got wet and stretched.

Yep got several ratchet straps and was planning on that.
Thanks everyone for the responses

You might want to throw something up there as well between the bars. Maybe a piece of wood or somethign? I only mention this because the roof in our beloved XJ's bows quite easily under weright (don't ask me how I know ). If I've got the idea of your setup right, you've just got crossbars, right? I'd just put a couple planks between them, set the tires on top, and ratchet the hell out of them...squish the tires a bit...:)

good thinking. I know what you mean about the soft tops ;)
thanks

Heres a silly question. Why not put them all in the back of your XJ? Unless you are not driving it. I fit 4 35x12.50 claws in the back of mine and one on the roof and can carry 5 31x10.50 on rims in the back, not at the same time though.

Forgot to include the fact that I am bringing two large dogs with me! Otherwise they would go in the back.
